Warm Hearted Tale

Set in the idyllic countryside of Morristown New Jersey.

The story follows confident carpenter Teresa Parker. Teresa cares for her beloved 6 year old nephew after the death of his parents.

Currently single Teresa meets her nephew's school teacher and each are deeply attracted to the wonderful qualities in the other. Both women are twenty-something and have been hurt in love but are open to a relationship with the other.

This is a lovely and carefully paced romance.

This is the first book I've read by Lynne Norris. I've had this page open in my browser and didn't know what to say. It's an average book, and I mean that in the nicest way possible. There's nothing in it that particularly bugged me, the characters were likeable and believable, the story felt real, it was moving. It was a good read. But at the same time it didn't leave a lasting impression. No flaws, no high points. It is a well-crafted story, the writing is good, it was just missing that certain special something that would make it stand out in a sea of books like it, IMO.

MERJA MAKINEN is Principal Lecturer in English Literary Studies, Middlesex University, UK, and former Programme Tutor for the MA in Popular Literary Fictions. She has published on feminist writing in the Twentieth-century (especially on Angela Carter and Jeanette Winterson) and on popular genre fiction, including detective and crime writing.

Much More of a Feminist than Previous Critics have Argued

Merja Makinen has gone back to basics in her spirited defense of Agatha Christie's feminism, and in doing so, takes nearly every other previous critic to task for errors of fact and emphasis. Makinen follows in the footsteps of Alison Light, whose discussion of Christie's class politics in Forever England (1991) has been something of a beacon to newer generations of scholars. But Forever England is not a monograph, and treats Christie together with several of her contemporaries, while Makinen seems better versed than Light in the poetics, if you will, of the detective novel.

She remarks that one thing that surprised her during her survey of previous academic work on Christie is how little each scholar paid attention to the others. Christie scholars, she concludes, are constantly reinventing the wheel, and even more surprising, they seem to get the same things wrong each time. One of the chief problems is that few academics take the trouble to read all of Christie's work, concentrating instead on a handful of titles, thus missing the boat on the bigger picture. In addition, Christie's autobiography, written late in life when her political views had shifted somewhat, is relied on far too often to provide the reasoning behind her early and much more radical writings.

Over and over again, she explains, we hear from academics that Christie didn't care for career women, etc., when if you actually sit down and read the books you find one glorious career woman after another. Makinen's first chapters are really her best, her readings of Christie's critics. When she ventures out on her own, however, she is nearly as good, and she does her homework. In the course of explicating Christie's generous views on gender parity, she jots down how much of a partnership the Beresford Partners in Crime series turns out to be, and she is able to show that Tommy solves exactly half the cases, and Tuppence exactly an equal number. On page 133 provides an impressive list of Christie works in which a female villain makes an appearance. Looking at it, you nearly think, is there any book that's not on this list? Christie's attraction to writing about the "bad" woman is even more apparent when you consider, as Makinen does, that in several novels heaps of different female villains crop up.

I enjoyed her individual readings of novels, but even more enjoyable is her identification of patterns among Christie's different writing periods, the "dark" novels of the second world war, in which she applies a denser psychology to her characters, the reversals of the Cold War, finally the late period in which (spoilers ahead) Makinen demonstrates that the plots of Third Girl and Endless Night mirror each other--a "coolly efficient" young modern exploits and destroys a younger girl with emotional or mental problems; and then she shows how At Bertram's Hotel plays with this formula and stands it on its head! I hadn't really thought of it like this before. (I guess you could say Cat Among the Pigeons and The Clocks do the same thing!) Anyway I enjoyed the book thoroughly: only one chapter, on real life tabloid treatments of female criminals in Christie's day, seems de trop. (A few pages of Christie's Mrs. McGinty's Dead cover much the same ground with a lot more point and esprit.)

An easy to grasp outline of Existentialism

Reading Jean-Paul Sartre's "Existentialism and Human Emotions" is a much easier approach to understanding Sartre's philosophy than reading Sartre's more concentrated work such as "Being and Nothingness." Although I think the best introduction to Sartre is through reading "Nausea" and the plays. This book tries to explain what Existentialism is and what it tries to do. Sartre also defends Existentialism against attacks on it by other Philosophies and the public that often assumes Existentialism is a sad philosophy; giving man no meaning and leads him to nihilistic despair. On the contrary, Sartre says that Existentialism is the only way to give man meaning and dignity. The book also touches on the idea of Man wanting to be God in a world where God does no exist. Sartre at the end gives a quick summing up of Existential Psycho-anaylis. A basic thesis of this work could be explained as the following: "Man is free when in total involvement and action and from Freedom man has an ultimate responsibility he must follow as his actions have to do with all mankind."
I would recommend "Existentialism and Human Emotions" to anyone who wants to understand Existentialism without getting a headache from reading more complicated works(i.e. "Being and Nothingness," Heideggar etc..) I am an avid reader of Philosophy and I always refer back to this book when pondering a question about Existentialism. A must for anyone who is interested in Philosophy.

Precise formulation

Those not wishing to slog through some of Sartre's weightier work will find "Existentialism and Human Emotions" a very useful statement and summation of the principles of Sartre's beliefs. More than half a century after existentialism came to the fore, I, for one, find the ideas as compelling as ever.
Sartre shows on the one hand that existentialism was a movement born out of the rejection of ideology. Ideas that come packaged and defined and handed to the individual for unquestioning acceptance hold no interest for the existentialist. While Sartre makes few, if any, explicit references to the disastrous totalitarian mass movements that gave rise to World War II, it's clear that these -- along with organized religion -- are his targets.
The core of Sartre's analysis lies in his assertion that "existence precedes essence." Every other piece of existentialism flows from this idea that Man, at birth, is a being for whom nothing is determined. Man, Sartre argues, creates the story that becomes his life through living, pure and simple.
From this it follows that all of our lives are shaped by choice. Another of Sartre's famous contentions emerges from the book, that even if one does nothing, that in itself is a choice. Man cannot escape that responsibility for his actions. There is, as Sartre was to famously and dramatically delineate later, "no exit."
For me, the most important idea in the book is that it convincingly refutes the shallow attack often leveled at existentialism: that it is dressed-up nihilism. Sartre shows that the existentialists do not reject meaning; they simply insist that there is no a priori meaning. In fact, in their rejection of ideology and determinism, the existentialists embrace meaning, for what is meaning unless it is that which one discovers on his own, through his own questing?
You can read this book in a couple of hours. For some of us, though, its material has given us a lifetime of things to think about.

Good for starters

If your interest has been picqued by existentialism, whether it be Sartre's or existentialism in general, this is a decent place to start for a theoretical work. This should be read with Nausea, as the latter is his first novel in addition to being a complete work (so is the first essay, however it is a speech and was not intended at first for publication). If you are fairly serious about understanding the complexities of Sartre's philosophy, I would highly recomend Being and Nothingness or, at least, The Philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre, a collection of Sartre's works as edited by Robert Cumming. Nevertheless, this was my first introduction to Sartre and though it failed to give me a full explanation of Sartre's ideas, it will satisfy those desiring a fleeting encounter with a philosophy that speaks more loudly to us even today than it did when it shouted to the resistant spirit of the French in 1943.

A Slower and More Complex Empathy

This essay is a mash-up of social psychology, psychoanalysis, pop-culture, internet subculture, philosophy, personal storytelling, and poetry. So I'm not sure how much it will appeal to people outside those who subscribe to N+1 and the Paris review. But if you are stumbling on this book because you are interested in the subject, I want to urge you to read it and surrender to its unconventional form.

I did, and it blew my mind. It is mysterious and wise, and it gives the reader "dazzling opportunities for a slower and more complex empathy."

The Age of Diagnosing Others

In a world where terms such as "narcissist" are bandied about by every man and woman on the street, this essay brings a needed dose of reality, both as to the difficulty (and rarity) of an accurate DSM V diagnosis and to the thin and contradictory ice upon which the entire constellation of "scientific" subsets is based. It is also a vivid reminder of the industries that grow up around the pop psychology of the day and a window into what we gain for ourselves when we blithely label others in such a manner. Dumbek lays out this cautionary tale by examining the theories, research, and behaviors that gave rise to the category of disorder, without glibly discarding them. My only criticism is that either Dombek or the proofreading of the kindle version was lax in attribution of some of the content. Was this Dombek's opinion? Was it a quote that was printed without quotation marks? Did I just miss a paragraph? A few more transitional sentences would have added clarity. Am I, perhaps, so smart and sensitive that I understood it anyway and anyone who doesn't is a whining narcissists?

An amazing journey !

After reading "Eyes" I just knew that a 2nd book would be coming. It just amazes me how Sam could endure all that life has thrown his way. I see his posts on FaceBook and realized he IS living his life now and helping many others who are following similar paths. As a happily married gay man in his 60's and who grew up in central New York State I would never had realized what Sam spoke about could have happened. But being the world we live in today nothing surprises me anymore. Society pretty much stinks at all levels. Keep changing lives and making a difference Sam!

This book was amazing it was intense raw and just bone crushing heartbreaking!!! Being able to live and write this story about being raped molested and almost killed is awesome!!Great job in telling your truth taking a stand for your worth and not giving a damn about what know one has to say!!!after enduring all that Samuel u deserve nothing but blessings blessings and more blessings

In all the book was great, some errors, but not hard to understand what was meant. It was hard for me to keep up with the different people in the book like the cousins and aunts because it was so many names. I was terrified for Samuel. It takes real courage and faith in God to forgive like He did. Anticipating the next book...God Bless You...
