Next Installment in a Very Engaging Series

I always find myself enjoying M Louisa Locke's engaging, cozy mysteries, set in Victorian San Francisco and this new novel is no exception. They are written with a tremendous sense of historical accuracy coupled with a real affection for her characters on the part of the writer. In Bloody Lessons we revisit the charming, clever Annie Fuller running her comfortable boarding house, while dispensing astute financial advice in the guise of a psychic medium. This is the only way in which she can get her clients to take her seriously, at this time - but you get the feeling that things are about to change!
The novel begins with Laura Dawson, the young sister of Nate Dawson, the attractive lawyer with whom we (and Annie) have become familiar throughout the first two novels in the series. Laura has come to San Francisco to take up a position as a teacher but almost immediately she has two deeply distressing experiences, which will colour the rest of the story. Soon, Annie and Nate are drawn into a complex series of events which centre on the school system and a number of pernicious anonymous letters. This is 'cozy crime' so there is little to shock or disturb, but a very great deal to interest - and I always find this writer's work interesting. In this case, the school setting fascinated me, and since the novel is set in a place which is quite unfamiliar to me, this added an extra dimension of gentle pleasure. These make great bed-time reading. They won't give you nightmares, but you will quickly feel a part of Nate and Annie's world. And as the novel gathers pace towards the end, this becomes a genuine page turner - not least because the writer has allowed us to become so fond of her well drawn cast of characters.

Ms Locke does it again!

San Francisco comes alive in this latest addition to M Louisa Locke's cozy Victorian mystery series. Each book in the series not only provides an entertaining `whodunnit' but also uses social issues of the times to drive the plot such as servants' working conditions (Maids of Misfortune) and spiritualism (Uneasy Spirits). This time the political machinations behind the public education system provides the catalyst for events that lead the ever resourceful Annie Fuller and her fiancé, Nate Dawson, into an investigation to discover the identity of a blackmailer. In addition to this story thread, Locke has introduced Laura Dawson, Nate's sister, who has her own mystery to uncover. The strong willed, ambitious Laura (good heavens, a woman who wants to eschew marriage so she can go to university?) is a welcome addition to the cast of characters as her relationship with a civil war veteran reminds the reader how soon after this conflict Bloody Lessons is set, and highlights the age-old plight of returning soldiers who are expected to transition easily back into civilian life after suffering psychological and physical trauma.

Locke deftly weaves the back story of her other two novels into the book so that it can easily be read `out of order', however, those who have already been introduced to the lively and sociable residents of Annie's boarding house will enjoy learning more about their lives, and indeed, some of their darker secrets.

The romance between Annie and Nate is not without continuing complications despite the fact they are officially courting. The etiquette of the era is well described when it comes to the couple observing `seemly' behaviour but Locke does a nice job of conveying how both Nate and Annie are finding it increasingly harder not to get `hot and bothered' even when they are determined to meet societal standards.

I can highly recommend Bloody Lessons to all those who love historical mysteries where intrigue and romance are entwined with meticulous research, engaging characters and a well-paced plot.

Excellent character-driven mystery

Locke is one of my favorite writers. Her in-depth knowledge of the time period (she's a retired history prof) gives her books real historical flavor, the mystery is top-notch, but it is her handling of the characters, even the supporting cast, that make this book (and the whole series) really special. Writing characters that are engaging to the modern reader, but true to their time period is tricky. As someone who has read a lot of primary source material (e.g. letters from various war fronts, period newspaper articles, etc.) in addition to being an avid reader of historical fiction, I find Locke's handling of her characters simply amazing. Many of her characters have uncommon (but never impossible or too modern) goals or ideas for their times, but it is often that conflict between the times and her characters' personalities and foibles which drives the plot.

The story in Bloody Lessons is set against a backdrop of a very real political and social crisis in San Francisco in the late 1870's and early 1880's. In many ways the actual events were far more sensational and unbelievable than the happenings in the book. The mystery revolves around teachers and teaching during a time when the public school system in California was the focus of an intense partisan conflict.

The primary character, Annie Fuller, is a widowed boarding house owner and part-time clairvoyant whose newest boarder, Laura Dawson, is assaulted in the alley behind the boarding house. Laura is not only a teacher, but also the younger sister of Annie's love interest, lawyer Nate Dawson. The situation only gets murkier from there.

In the course of dealing with the mystery and the subsequent events, Annie, Nate, Laura, and a few other characters (no spoilers) all learn things about themselves that go beyond the events of the mystery. Much to my surprise, I found myself more interested in the personal journeys than the resolution of the mystery. But then the mystery was solved and it was very well-done. Without giving anything away, I will say if you find yourself questioning the motives of the villain, I would suggest you read up on the background crisis in the San Francisco school system at that time.

Scott Meyer grew up in the small town of Sunnyside, Washington. He began his career in humor by working as a stand-up comedian and radio personality, a highlight of which was participating as the opening act in Weird Al Yankovic’s Running with Scissors tour. Following a long stint touring the United States and Canada, Scott settled down in Orlando, Florida, where he works on his ongoing comic strip, Basic Instructions. Off to be the Wizard is his first novel.

Really enjoyable -- a good read and a great first novel

Reading this book was a great time. The type of humor that you see in
the Basic Instructions webcomic is throughout, but magnified a
thousandfold by the fact that there are more than four panels of
words. :) The characters are nicely developed without being overdone,
and the interactions between and among them are great. The use of
different eras of technology shows a little of the author's geekiness
(which is a good thing!).

For a first novel, taking on time travel is a bit ambitious. But the
boundaries are well-laid out up front, sensible (as much as time
travel can be :) and internally consistent. And the use of characters
from different times all together is very well executed -- more
sophisticated than a lot of established authors' attempts at the
topic. Plus, the shout-outs to other culture (Star Trek, Star Wars,
Tolkien, Apple, mythology, music, and so on) are nice touches without being
gimmicky.

All in all, it was fun and funny AND quirky and clever. *Really*
great when you remember it's a first novel.

I highly recommend it, and I'm a fairly tough customer. The E-book
version is a steal, as well -- the ratio of enjoyment/$ is WAY up
there.

Surprisingly good first novel

I became aware of this book because I'm a longtime fan of the author's webcomic, Basic Instructions. I wasn't sure whether I'd really like it - I love the comic, but a full-length novel's a different thing entirely - but the Kindle version is super cheap, so I gave it a shot, and was pleasantly rewarded. In fact I had trouble putting the book down until I had reached the end.

Not only was the book filled with a very enjoyable brand of wry humor - and a more sophisticated, subtler type of humor than usually appears in the comic, in my opinion - it was well-written, with likable characters, good character development, a rewarding (if fairly standard) plot, and just about zero time-travel inconsistencies or plot holes. That last bit is important to me because I'm picky enough that any incongruencies can definitely un-suspend my disbelief, but the author defined the rules early and then stuck by them fastidiously.

The prose, sure, is not going to compete with Updike or Wallace for sheer sentence-by-sentence beauty or complexity, but it's really quite good, and never clunky or strained. Better than the prose in a lot of the novels on "best seller" lists, at any rate.

All in all, the book delivers exactly what it says on the tin - "a light comedic novel about computers, time travel, and human stupidity" - and delivers it well. A really enjoyable read.

Scott - Mr. Meyer? - if you chance to read this: Well done! You clearly left yourself some room for a sequel, and I think you should go for it! :)

Lightweight Entertainment

This is a lightweight spoofy Matrix novel where, at the start, the protagonist learns that the universe and most notably, the humans in it, are really just entries in an editable .txt file. That discovery leads to his adventures most notably in time travel.

In more deft hands, say a Terry Prachett or John Scalzi, this setup may have led to some sharp satire but here we only get a straight ahead bash them on the head, get frantic and then charge to the ending sort of short novel. There is nothing wrong with that except perhaps some lost opportunities, but gosh, no novel or any art form is really complete in the fullest sense.

The upsides to this bit of fluff have been lauded by other reviewers here so I won't repeat them. The issues I had which others may not have had are a few and lead to the docking of a few stars. First, I'm fine with suspension of disbelief. There is no way you can enjoy this novel if you can't accept the existence of that .txt file and I can. What bugs me is when authors distort what we know is real. Frex, if I am reading about dragons attacking France, I'll go for the dragons but if the author has Germany west of France just over the Pyrenees, I don't buy that.

Here the time travel takes us to roughly King John era England. The protagonist specifically travels there because they speak English and by gosh, they do. They speak 21st century American English as well. Gimme a break. Then we have the natives who are casual with not only modern devices (among them a Pontiac) but 'wizards' who have more tricks than Superman and Batman combined. However, we're told they won't accept a female doing these tricks. So the natives aren't disturbed by Pontiacs but they are by tricky females. Hmmm.

Toward the end of the novel, the author stumbles upon a rather interesting philosophical argument. One character takes the position that if the only thing people are is a few lines in a .txt file, then do we have any ethical obligations to them? However, this rather interesting line is abandoned instantly and the bash on the head full steam forward pace picks back up.

Another hit against this one is that it's not a novel. It's a Part 1 of what's clearly a series. So again, and this is getting to be a tedious trend in Kindle editions, we get a piece of a novel masquerading as a complete book. The end isn't an ending but almost a cliff hanger which clearly telegraphs that 'this thing is NOT over'.

Entertaining, but also disappointing.

Easy to Use, Easy to Learn

I purchased this book because i read some of the reviews on this book and decided to take a chance on it. I am jumping for joy, this book IS truly the best darn chord book on the market and I've seen many. I cant believe the way this book is laid out and I expected a skinny all purpose book, but I got a fairly thick book full of magnificent chord forms in an amazing array of fingerings. The guitarist who purchase this book will be so far ahead of most other guitarists who just cant seem to find the right book to work from, this book is great for pros and soon to be pros because what is in this book will create pros.

What can I say...this is the guitar book that I have been searching for! This book not only gives you options to finding just the right chord progressions, but it is easy to use! You don't have to be a music major to appreciate this book. You don't even have to be a "good" guitar player, because this book will strengthen your ability to play. This is the book that most guitar players look for, but never find...well...your search is over...this is it!I highly recommend this book! Buy it!
By the way, I am not the author, just a guitar player who needed a break!

Great for training and discipleship

I highly recommend this book. Floyd McClung is in a unique place to speak about healthy discipleship (after his key leadership role with YWAM and years of missionary experience and church planting work). Although the book is just being released in the U.S., we were able to get a copies of the South African version at the beginning of the year and we started using the book with our Discipleship Training School at the church here in Fort Worth. The book is built around following Jesus and living life by three great loves (core values)... Loving Jesus, Loving Each Other, and Loving Those Who Don't Know Christ. Based on the way the book was received in the Spring semester, we are using it again (the U.S. version this time) and it is already proving to be a great help in getting to the key issues of practical discipleship.

"Follow" will be a great resource for personal discipleship and growth, for helping someone else or a few others in a small group focused on discipleship, or even in a larger class or training environment (like we're doing). Highly recommended. : )

Full of Solid Biblical Truths that when Live Out will Change the World

McClung structures his book around three basic characteristics: Loving God, Loving Others, and Loving those who don't know Jesus. All truths he presents flow from these three basic ideas. He focuses first on how we as believers can align our lives with the person of Jesus, allowing our lives to be shaped in different areas such as humility, obedience, and prayer. I personally enjoyed his chapter on prayer where he includes several different practical strategies of prayer that he has learned from his years of ministry.

The middle section of Follow focuses on loving those who don't know Jesus. In this section, McClung tells of how we can practically live like Jesus - to not ask the question, "What would Jesus do" but instead to ask the question, "What is Jesus doing" and how can I be a part today. Also, he goes into detail about how evangelism can and is to look in our modern day society and around the world including practical tips to overcome fear and other hindrances that we as believers often face.

If you love Jesus and have any passion to see the nations reached, as you should, then the final section will make you want to throw the book on the floor, and run out your front door to tell the world about Jesus. Seriously, I could not go to bed last night when I finished the book. I reiterated to my wife again how Jesus is going to change the world, and how God created our family to be a part of it today. We both got excited.

Ultimately, McClung's new book Follow has the potential to challenge every believer to deeper levels in Christ and to stir up a passion to see God's kingdom come here on earth as it is in heaven. From his admonitions in the final chapters about how God created us to live in a committed community, to finding people of peace, and ultimately seeing a church-planting movement that radically transforms society and touches the four corners of the earth, this book touches it all.

Want to create world-changers in people? Get the values in this book ingrained in the lives of those around you - they are straight from the Word. If I had one negative thing to say about the book it is that Floyd McClung does not come with it so that I can thank him for articulating these timeless values of scripture into a book where we can all find gain.

Follow Jesus, not Religion

As a book reviewer I tend to see a trend with books that come across my desk. Lately, a lot of the books I've been reading have to do with practical ways on how to follow Jesus, or how to be a disciple of Christ. Follow, by author Floyd McClung is one of those books, but his words and his methods penetrated deep into my soul and gave me hope.

As the back cover states, "Follow is a real-life, right-now guide to living life the Jesus way - a challenge to get out of the boat of dull religion and find the kind of adventure that happens to ordinary people when the dare to walk on water." The author admits that he wrote the book with the "underlying belief that any hierarchy and all institutionalization of the church, lead us directly away from Jesus Himself." Wow! Strong words, but he makes a convincing argument. How many times have you heard someone say they can't stand church or don't go to church? And when you ask them why, what do they usually say? Too many rules, too self-righteous, too boring! I've heard many more and I know you have too. The point, says the author, is that we need to return to Jesus as our source and our example on how to live life and "do church" together. We must study His life, spend time in His presence, be filled with His spirit, and fulfill his mission with others in the community.

In other words, Follow is about being a devoted disciple of Christ and not a pretender or "unthinking captive" to cultural Christianity. We need to get rid of doctrine and get back to Jesus. Follow shows you how to do that with insightful writing and questions that will make you pause and examine yourself at the end of each chapter. Plus, it also includes a bible study for your cell-group.

The first chapter is repenting of religion and sets the theme for the book. The author continues on with how we should love Jesus. Dealing with topics such as obedience, repentance, Lordship, pride and prayer to name a few. If you are seeking a closer walk with the Lord that hearkens back to the kind of discipleship He intended, you would do well to pick up this book.

About the Author
Victoria Fromkin received her bachelor's degree in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was a member of the faculty of the UCLA Department of Linguistics from 1966 until her death, and served as its chair from 1972 to 1976. From 1979 to 1989 she served as the UCLA Graduate Dean and Vice Chancellor of Graduate Programs. She was a visiting professor at the universities of Stockholm, Cambridge, and Oxford. Professor Fromkin served as president of the Linguistics Society of America in 1985, president of the Association of Graduate Schools in 1988, and chair of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Aphasia. She received the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award and the Professional Achievement Award, and served as the U.S. Delegate and a member of the Executive Committee of the International Permanent Committee of Linguistics (CIPL). She was an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Science, the American Psychological Society, and the Acoustical Society of America, and in 1996 was elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences. She published more than one hundred books, monographs, and papers on topics concerned with phonetics, phonology, tone languages, African languages, speech errors, processing models, aphasia, and the brain/mind/language interface--all research areas in which she worked. Professor Fromkin passed away in 2000, at the age of 76.

Robert Rodman received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1961, a master's degree in mathematics in 1965, a master's degree in linguistics in 1971, and a Ph.D. in linguistics in 1973. He has been on the faculties of the University of California at Santa Cruz, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Kyoto Industrial College in Japan, and North Carolina State University, where he is currently professor of computer science specializing in the areas of forensic linguistics, computer speech processing, and speaker verification and identification.

Nina Hyams received her bachelor's degree in journalism from Boston University in 1973 and her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in linguistics from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in 1981 and 1983, respectively. She joined the UCLA faculty in 1983, where she is currently professor of linguistics. Her main areas of research are childhood language development and syntax. She is author of LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND THE THEORY OF PARAMETERS (D. Reidel Publishers, 1986), a milestone in language acquisition research. She has also published numerous articles on the development of syntax, morphology, and semantics in children. She has been a visiting scholar at the University of Utrecht and the University of Leiden in the Netherlands and has given numerous lectures throughout Europe and Japan.

Fun is the theme

This book might be the most used introductory linguistics book in the world. I am very glad to have read its seventh edition. The number of editions might be proof of the quality and popularity of this book. How many textbooks can be in print for such a long time?

The theme of this book is to make linguistics fun, and accessible. The use of cartoons, the quotes from famous authors, paragraphs discussing everyday use of language, and many more, all make the reader enjoy reading and studying linguistics.

But on the other hand, the effort to make it fun will probably turn those serious students away. Anyways they are here for a university level course on the science of linguistics, where they expect to see compelling arguments, and serious discussions, rather than cartoons and funny word games.

Moreover since this book was first written in the 70's, there are still many outdated data in the seventh edition, although it has been updated.

The chapters on the core fields of linguistics, i.e. phonetics/phonology, syntax, semantics, and historical linguistics, seem to be a little too thin. While chapters on sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, and writing systems can be interesting, students still need to have a solid foundation in the core fields of linguistics before they can successfully tap into the more interdisciplinary fields.

Overall, this is one of the best introductory linguistics textbooks, although it tends to be not very serious, and in-depth, which could be excused for an intro textbook.

Good Introduction

This is a very good introduction to theoretical linguistics and its subdisciplines. Some of the concept are somewhat difficult, but it's nothing that a good re-read can't fix. It covers all the components that make up linguistics i.e. phonology, syntax, etc. but it also adds some cool chapters on language and the brain, language change, and psycholinguistics which are all plusses in my book. This textbook provides good cartoons to illustrate some key points,the exercises are good for beginner's (perhaps some too easy) and the authors provide some really good suggested readings although some might the suggestions insanely difficult to read even after reading this book (for example, after reading the chapter on syntax, it suggests you read Chomsky's minimalist program. If this is the student's first introduction to syntax, then I really doubt they could tackle that book). All in all, I think its a perfect book to use in an introductory language class. The only problem I have with this book is its price. Way too expensive!!!

Sweet, Sweet linguisitcs

I find it odd that some people didn't like this book, for I thought the action thereof was exceedingly sweet. I guess different strokes for different folks. Anyway I took an Introductory linguistics course that used this textbook, and found myself enjoying the reading assignments. I even read chapters I wasn't assigned to and ended up reading the whole thing. The book was easy to follow, entertaining, and really taught me a lot about linguistics.

Basically telling you to "believe in yourself" and do the special diet and yoga, which they try to sell you, and it'll work. Maybe for some, but didn't work for me. Only thing I've found is, go to meetings, get a sponsor, and do the other things AA recommends you do. Not foolproof, but when you've hit your bottom, you'll know it..........and AA's worked for millions.

Good book, if you apply yourself

This was a good book. I grew up with alcoholism in my family and found that I was self medicating. It is a good book. If you really apply yourself you can do it! I can say that it helped me and my fiance for about 30 days, but then we went back to our old ways. But that's just like anything out there. I will pick it up again one day. I recommend it to anyone struggling with drinking even if you aren't a typical "alcoholic". Just if you find yourself drinking more than you used to. Or if you are a full blown alcoholic. This can help.

UPDATE (2 years since my initial review): Years later, I gave a copy of this book to my mother. She quit drinking after reading it. Years of daily drinking to excess. She quit after she read this book. I am not into self help books, I buy them, but can never get into them. This book was just different. I no longer drink at all, haven't had a drink in nearly 2 years due to health reasons.

Great book

I did AA several years ago and while it does have its benefits it also has a lot of downfalls. I had started drinking too heavily again and decided I wanted to get sober but was not looking to go back to AA.
I stumbled upon this book and I really like it!
It has been very helpful. I just had 30 days yesterday and I feel great!

I don't think there is really any competition for Schwartz in the housing policy textbook arena. The book was comprehensive in the first edition, and it has been updated frequently and well. This latest edition establishes HPITUS as the central text on US housing policy. It covers all the foundational topics and is delivered without favoritism. It should be read first, purchased in hardback, and keep as a resource.
