Very insightful!

This book is very important, and rings with truth throughout. It opened up a whole new world of understanding for myself and for other men who might be in some form suffering from enmeshment with their mothers. Considering how many relationships between mothers and sons today are probably falling under this category, a book like this cannot be recommended and valued enough. I also really appreciated a short breakdown by the author on how psychotherapy works, and how it compares to other forms of help such as life coaching or talking to a priest or a compassionate friend. I learned a lot reading this - thank you!

Great book. Even if you don't have an exceptionally abusive mother still read this book.

Good lord where was this book when I was a teenager. I've been saying for years that I'm my mom's surrogate husband. My mom isn't outwardly abusive either. But our relationship wasn't healthy and I struggled with that for years, many of which without being aware of it. In fact I used to brag about being super close with my mom. It wasn't true. It was very unhealthy. If you have ANY mom issues take a few days and read this book. It will definitely help.

This book is written in a way that is engaging, the author Kenneth Adams tells stories of his clients (names and places changed) in an insightful engaging manner helping the reader understand the dynamics of men who are enmeshed with their mothers and how this plays out in their adult lives regardless of whether they are still in touch with their mother or not. VERY helpful book I feel for all men and all mothers with sons and oh for anyone who is in a relationship with a man as well. First self help book I had trouble putting down!!

The self-seeking stepchildren are driven to distraction by their vain efforts to browbeat Mrs. Savage, but she preserves her equanimity and leads them on a merry chase. At last her friends conspire to get rid of her stepchildren, and through their simple belief in the justice of her cause, they enable Mrs. Savage to carry out her plans. The last scene, a farewell party, is a delightful fantasy where each "guest" in the sanatorium realizes at last some hopeless dream for something he was never able to realize. The dominant mood is high comedy, and the audience is left with a feeling that the neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely lost in a world that seems motivated at times only by greed and dishonesty.

Wonderful Story

I was introduced to "The Curious Savage" last fall when I played Miss Willie in a college theatre production. I instantly fell in love with all the characters in the story. John Patrick perfectly created characters whom society has labeled as "crazy," who are in fact, fairly close parallels to everyone in the world. The play mixes drama with comedy in a way that honestly leaves you with "warm fuzzies." Every character plays wonderfully off of the others and the lively and interesting dialogue helps suppport the strong plot. It would be as enjoyable a read as it would to perform in and see in production.

A wonderful take on society

Although this play takes place around 1950, it's certainly speaking through the ages. As someone who has read and also performed as Jeff in this play, you can relate the message of greed and want against our society. John Patrick takes a bunch of "Crazy People" and through them and Mrs. Savage and the Savage children shows us that all a human truly wants is to want nothing, but that's not possible. We need to strive for something in society, and sometimes that means being foolish...such as Mrs. Savage is. Everyone can relate to a character in this show, and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to do a show or read a play that is beautiful in it's meaning.

Great Play

I love this play. The more I read it the more I love it. I'm currently rehearsing as Mrs. Savage, we open in March. I love all the characters, and it's so sweet-especially the storyline between Willie and Jeff. There's a lot of comedy, some really good message, a little omance, and some suspense at the end. A great read :)

Sam Walton had a contract with Doubleday to write his life story and hired three top-flight authors but fired them, one after another.  He said he couldn't help me, but still sneaked me info from time to time.  Finally he cancelled Doubleday and offered to consult with me.  He, his wife Helen and son Rob checked this manuscript for accuracy, not as censors.  Sam liked the book.  I had never met him but we became, in the end, I think pretty good friends.  I think this is the most complete and truthful story ever written about his life and career.

"How and Why Sam Walton Invented Wal-Mart" is a well-written book. It goes into the early background and hardships of growing up without all of the privileges he left his kids. It shows the opportunities that America once provided a young, poor man to get ahead before mega corporations took control of our economy and government. In my personal opinion his creation is a prime example of why we should retain the inheritance tax and lay it on at turn of generations for a better equalization of wealth for the common good. It is an excellent book that everyone should read even if they don't like the present policies of Wal-Mart.--J. Glenn Evans

Dr Val Webb in her latest book “TESTING TRADITION and LIBERATING THEOLOGY: FINDING YOUR OWN VOICE” argues persuasively for Lay people “doing theology”. This is Dr Webb’s 11th book as a well recognised Lay theologian within the protestant tradition of the Uniting Church.
By putting the study of theology into it historical context, Dr Webb’s book should be mandatory for all contemplating serious theological study. It is comprehensive with chapters covering the definitions and history of theology through the last 2000 years. It is particularly valuable because of its autobiographical thread which covers Dr Webb’s own lay theological journey of discovery from the early certainties of an evangelical faith to the doubts that modernity and post-modernity throws at us. This brings Dr Webb’s book into the heart of contextual theology. Covered are Church, liberation, feminist, process and ecological theologies that emerge out of this approach. Such contextual theology I have found invaluable in sustaining my Christian faith through many difficult situations throughout my personal and professional life.
As the title of the book suggests Dr Webb does not avoid the challenges facing the Church in constructing a syllabus for “lay theological education” that balances the claims of supernatural versus natural revelation. In particular, the view of ordination that developed in church history but was challenged by the Reformation where the passing of the apostolic succession by the laying on of hands granted a special privilege. A privilege which often consigned the Laity to second class status in theological discourse.
For example Dr Webb states that “- it always amazes people to discover that neither “Fall” nor “Sin” is mentioned in the Genesis story of Adam and Eve” (Page 170), as the Church’s doctrine of “Original Sin” arises out of St Augustine’s contextual theologising of his struggles with his youthful sexual misadventures. The surprise comes when one discovers that the first biblical reference to “Sin” actually comes when God warns Cain: “ …. Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it." (Genesis 4:7b). Cain does not resist, murders his brother and in the subsequent narrative, Sin is defined as not just violence but “escalatory violence”. This I find a more useful and biblically based theology for the global human and ecological violence that confronts us today.

Theology - a task for everybody

I found this book very helpful in understanding (and justifying!) my own religious journey. It also has a wealth of information that is very clearly explained.

Val Webb speaks directly to the readers in "Testing Tradition", calling us to work out our own theology. I just hope that your book will be read by the unconvinced outside the current progressive Christian audience. I learned a lot about how what is said to be what the church believes/teaches is, in fact, either quite recent or just a swing of the pendulum back to an earlier emphasis. You made some arcane theological disputes very clear - I had not seen before how the concept of the trinity came from the need for an efficacious Eucharist, coupled with Greek dualistic views. Your talk of the growth of clericalism and the deligitimisation of the laity from any theological role was very clear and powerful. It certainly lines up with my recent (and failed) experience in the local church.

In a time of increasing polarity in religious and political life, Val Webb's "Testing Tradition and Liberating Theology" is a gentle but persuasive aid for us who are questioning doctrine and power systems. Her chapter progression and generous use of meaty quotations from all ages is excellent. I especially found her call for 'theological hospitality' challenging The book is ready for use as a study guide or book review. She calls for 'doing theology', which invites lay persons to examine personally, or in a group that listens to one another, the many theologies beyond a dominant christian one, therefore liberating theology, as in the title. The context of experience (as also tradition, scripture, and reason) leads the reader to "do theology". Clergy should welcome, review and share this readable book with their peers and engage lay persons who are uncomfortable in an atmosphere of rigid traditions. A book to share!!

good book it holds your hand right to the end.from lbuilding the mould to so some of the tools you will need i dont have a band saw but it can be done .simple line drawings in the book are good and easy to follow the sorces are for across the pond but we have some great ones on this side also .if you are handy and want to build , one this book will do it for you

This is a very detailed book about building resonator guitars. It is way over my head unfortunately, but I have learned a lot about guitars reading it. Recommended for those who want to build a resonator from scratch and have a good set of wood tools.
