Inverse Problems : Tikhonov Theory and Algorithms (Series on Applied Mathematics), by Kazufumi Ito

Inverse problems arise in practical applications whenever one needs to deduce unknowns from observables. This monograph is a valuable contribution to the highly topical field of computational inverse problems. Both mathematical theory and numerical algorithms for model-based inverse problems are discussed in detail. The mathematical theory focuses on nonsmooth Tikhonov regularization for linear and nonlinear inverse problems. The computational methods include nonsmooth optimization algorithms, direct inversion methods and uncertainty quantification via Bayesian inference.

The book offers a comprehensive treatment of modern techniques, and seamlessly blends regularization theory with computational methods, which is essential for developing accurate and efficient inversion algorithms for many practical inverse problems.

It demonstrates many current developments in the field of computational inversion, such as value function calculus, augmented Tikhonov regularization, multi-parameter Tikhonov regularization, semismooth Newton method, direct sampling method, uncertainty quantification and approximate Bayesian inference. It is written for graduate students and researchers in mathematics, natural science and engineering.

Readership: Advanced undergraduates, graduates and researchers in applied mathematics, computational mathematics, optimization, statistics, natural science and engineering. It will appeal to those interested in inverse problems.

The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini

A Stunning Novel of Hope and Redemption

Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of the monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable and beautifully told story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Raised in the same household and sharing the same wet nurse, Amir and Hassan grow up in different worlds: Amir is the son of a prominent and wealthy man, while Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant, is a Hazara -- a shunned ethnic minority. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them. When Amir and his father flee the country for a new life in California, Amir thinks that he has escaped his past. And yet he cannot leave the memory of Hassan behind him.

The Kite Runner is a novel about friendship and betrayal, and about the price of loyalty. It is about the bonds between fathers and sons, and the power of fathers over sons -- their love, their sacrifices, and their lies. Written against a backdrop of history that has not been told in fiction before, The Kite Runner describes the rich culture and beauty of a land in the process of being destroyed. But through the devastation, Khaled Hosseini offers hope: through the novel's faith in the power of reading and storytelling, and in the possibilities he shows us for redemption.

Amazon.com Review
In his debut novel, The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini accomplishes what very few contemporary novelists are able to do. He manages to provide an educational and eye-opening account of a country's political turmoil--in this case, Afghanistan--while also developing characters whose heartbreaking struggles and emotional triumphs resonate with readers long after the last page has been turned over. And he does this on his first try.

The Kite Runner follows the story of Amir, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman in Kabul, and Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant. As children in the relatively stable Afghanistan of the early 1970s, the boys are inseparable. They spend idyllic days running kites and telling stories of mystical places and powerful warriors until an unspeakable event changes the nature of their relationship forever, and eventually cements their bond in ways neither boy could have ever predicted. Even after Amir and his father flee to America, Amir remains haunted by his cowardly actions and disloyalty. In part, it is these demons and the sometimes impossible quest for forgiveness that bring him back to his war-torn native land after it comes under Taliban rule. ("...I wondered if that was how forgiveness budded, not with the fanfare of epiphany, but with pain gathering its things, packing up, and slipping away unannounced in the middle of the night.")

Some of the plot's turns and twists may be somewhat implausible, but Hosseini has created characters that seem so real that one almost forgets that The Kite Runner is a novel and not a memoir. At a time when Afghanistan has been thrust into the forefront of America's collective consciousness ("people sipping lattes at Starbucks were talking about the battle for Kunduz"), Hosseini offers an honest, sometimes tragic, sometimes funny, but always heartfelt view of a fascinating land. Perhaps the only true flaw in this extraordinary novel is that it ends all too soon. --Gisele Toueg

From Publishers Weekly
Hosseini's stunning debut novel starts as an eloquent Afghan version of the American immigrant experience in the late 20th century, but betrayal and redemption come to the forefront when the narrator, a writer, returns to his ravaged homeland to rescue the son of his childhood friend after the boy's parents are shot during the Taliban takeover in the mid '90s. Amir, the son of a well-to-do Kabul merchant, is the first-person narrator, who marries, moves to California and becomes a successful novelist. But he remains haunted by a childhood incident in which he betrayed the trust of his best friend, a Hazara boy named Hassan, who receives a brutal beating from some local bullies. After establishing himself in America, Amir learns that the Taliban have murdered Hassan and his wife, raising questions about the fate of his son, Sohrab. Spurred on by childhood guilt, Amir makes the difficult journey to Kabul, only to learn the boy has been enslaved by a former childhood bully who has become a prominent Taliban official. The price Amir must pay to recover the boy is just one of several brilliant, startling plot twists that make this book memorable both as a political chronicle and a deeply personal tale about how childhood choices affect our adult lives. The character studies alone would make this a noteworthy debut, from the portrait of the sensitive, insecure Amir to the multilayered development of his father, Baba, whose sacrifices and scandalous behavior are fully revealed only when Amir returns to Afghanistan and learns the true nature of his relationship to Hassan. Add an incisive, perceptive examination of recent Afghan history and its ramifications in both America and the Middle East, and the result is a complete work of literature that succeeds in exploring the culture of a previously obscure nation that has become a pivot point in the global politics of the new millennium.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-This beautifully written first novel presents a glimpse of life in Afghanistan before the Russian invasion and introduces richly drawn, memorable characters. Quiet, intellectual Amir craves the attention of his father, a wealthy Kabul businessman. Kind and self-confident Hassan is the son of Amir's father's servant. The motherless boys play together daily, and when Amir wins the annual kite contest, Hassan offers to track down the opponent's runaway kite as a prize. When he finds it, the neighborhood bullies trap and rape him, as Amir stands by too terrified to help. Their lives and their friendship are forever changed, and the memory of his cowardice haunts Amir as he grows into manhood. Hassan and his father return to the village of their ancestors, and later Amir and his father flee to Los Angeles to avoid political persecution. Amir attends college, marries, and fulfills his dream of becoming a writer. When Amir receives word of his former friend's death under the Taliban, he returns to Kabul to learn the fate of Hassan's son. This gripping story of personal redemption will capture readers' interest.

Your heart will soar
By Ron Franscell, Author of 'Morgue: A Life in Death'
The earth turns and the wind blows and sometimes some marvelous scrap of paper is blown against the fence for us to find. And once found, we become aware there are places out there that are both foreign and familiar. Funny what the wind brings.
And now it brings "The Kite Runner," a beautiful novel by Afghan-American Khaled Hosseini that ranks among the best-written and provocative stories of the year so far.
Hosseini's first novel -- and the first Afghan novel to be written originally in English -- "The Kite Runner" tells a heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between Amir, the son of a wealthy Afghan businessman, and Hassan, the son of his father's servant. Amir is Sunni; Hassan is Shi'a. One is born to a privileged class; the other to a loathed minority. One to a father of enormous presence; the other to a crippled man. One is a voracious reader; the other illiterate.
The poor Hassan is born with a hare lip, but Amir's gaps are better hidden, deep inside.
Yet Amir and Hassan live and play together, not simply as friends, but as brothers without mothers. Their intimate story traces across the expansive canvas of history, 40 years in Afghanistan's tragic evolution, like a kite under a gathering storm. The reader is blown from the last days of Kabul's monarchy -- salad days in which the boys lives' are occupied with school, welcome snows, American cowboy movies and neighborhood bullies -- into the atrocities of the Taliban, which turned the boys' green playing fields red with blood.
This unusually eloquent story is also about the fragile relationship fathers and sons, humans and their gods, men and their countries. Loyalty and blood are the ties that bind their stories into one of the most lyrical, moving and unexpected books of this year.
Hosseini's title refers to a traditional tournament for Afghan children in which kite-flyers compete by slicing through the strings of their opponents with their own razor-sharp, glass-encrusted strings. To be the child who wins the tournament by downing all the other kites -- and to be the "runner" who chases down the last losing kite as it flutters to earth -- is the greatest honor of all.
And in that metaphor of flyer and runner, Hosseini's story soars.
And fear not, gentle reader. This isn't a "foreign" book. Unlike Boris Pasternak's "Dr. Zhivago," Hosseini's narrative resonates with familiar rhythms and accessible ideas, all in prose that equals or exceeds the typical American story form. While exotic Afghan customs and Farsi words pop up occasionally, they are so well-defined for the reader that the book is enlightening and fascinating, not at all tedious.
Nor is it a dialectic on Islam. Amir's beloved father, Baba, is the son of a wise judge who enjoys his whiskey, television, and the perks of capitalism. A moderate in heart and mind, Hosseini has little good to say about Islamic extremism.
"The Kite Runner" is a song in a new key. Hosseini is an exhilaratingly original writer with a gift for irony and a gentle, perceptive heart. His canvas might be a place and time Americans are only beginning to understand, but he paints his art on the page, where it is intimate and poignant.

Stunning, epic, extraordinary debut novel
By Peggy Vincent
I read 2-3 books a week, and this is without a doubt my favorite of this year. No, I'll go further: it's one of maybe 8-10 books I'd choose to take to a deserted isle. I've put The Kite Runner directly into the hands of perfect strangers in book stores and said, "Read this one."
In a nutshell, Amir, the son of a well-to-do Afghani , has a best friend, Hassan, who is the illiterate child of Amir's father's long-time servant. Both children are motherless. A horrific event, a secret kept, the loss of personal honor, and a lie come between the boys. From that rift, the story moves forward as Amir and his father emigrate to California, where Amir matures, marries, and becomes a successful writer, but is still plagued by those old sins and lies. Then comes a revelation of still one more long-held secret that sets Amir on a return trip to Afghanistan (now under the worst years of Taliban dominance) to rescue Hassan's child. Author Hosseini doesn't shy from one iota of unpleasantness, and the result is a book with a perfect narrative arc, a sterling story line, unforgettable characters, and and and and... I had the opportunity to meet the author very briefly (just to shake his hand and gush a bit about his extraordinary book) at Books by the Bay in San Francisco and am delighted to report that he is charming, approachable, and thoroughly engaging. He deserves all the accolades that are coming his way.
Buy The Kite Runner. Read it. Then go back to the store and buy 2 more signed 1st editions - one to keep as an investment and one to give to your best friend.
...what a fine book!

It's a story of Paradise . . . lost
By Dennis Frampton
This is a truly magnificent book! Without a doubt one of the very best stories I have ever read, not just because it is so beautifully written, but also because it is an important story. It takes place during the last thirty years of turbulent history in Afghanistan, and deals with a family and their love for each other and for their country. Author Khalid Hosseini no doubt has drawn heavily on his own life experiences to bring us this story. He was born to a wealthy family in Kabul Afghanistan and came to America as a political refugee in 1980. In The Kite Runner, Amir is the son of a prominent Pashtun family; his best friend, Hassan is the son of their servant man and a Hazara, a much hated ethnic minority. Despite their ethnic differences, Amir and Hassan are close friends throughout their childhood, both of them always mindful of Hassan's servant status. The two boys grow and learn, one of them privileged, the other deprived, both of them secure in the bosom of a prominent Pashtun family, both loved by the patriarch of that family, while the winds of change blew ceaselessly over the Afghan landscape. This story traces the lives of Amir and Baba his proud Father, and of Hassan and Ali his Father and faithful servant to Baba. In July of 1973, the people of Afghanistan woke to learn that while their King Zahir Shah was away in Italy, the Afghan monarchy had been ended in a bloodless coup led by the King's cousin Daoud Kahn. For a while there was peace in their lives but it was not to last. Before the end of that decade came first the Russians with soldiers, tanks and helicopter gun ships, and when they left, came the years of wanton destruction by the countless tribal war lords. This was to be ended, they thought mercifully, by the arrival of the Taliban, who at first brought order to the chaos, but later proved to be the most ruthless of killers. Amir and his Father left Afghanistan when the Russians arrived and came to America to settle in an Afghan community in San Francisco. However, the ties to their homeland and to the family they had left behind were to haunt them for years. One day, Amir received a telephone call from a friend in Pakistan and decided he must return. What he found there was a revelation of the awful changes which had been brought to his homeland and its people since his childhood. Don't buy this book because it is about that part of the world which changed our lives, don't buy it because it is a story about Muslims, don't even buy it because it is in a way a modern "Gone With The Wind" a story of a strong family in turbulent times. Buy it because it is a wonderful meaningful story, beautifully, sensitively written, by a man whose first language was not even our language, but who has mastered it as few of us have, and who has shown an unusual understanding of the workings of the human mind in times of great mental and physical stress.

Fans of The Selection will enjoy Numbers Game
By Jessica Beevers
Actual rating 3.5 stars.

I got a review copy of Numbers Game from the author. It is your standard YA Dystopian novel and in many ways reminded me of The Selection, although it bears a lot of resemblance to Uglies as well. In this world, the number you are given - your Rating - is everything. Treena, the heroine, gets an unlikely Rating that leads her to an adventure as well as a romance, but things aren't all simple and she loses a lot along the way.

My main difficulty with this book came from the timeline, which was very difficult to believe. Treena goes from thinking she'll spend the rest of her life with one guy to falling in love with another in the space of just a few days, and in the same time learns martial arts well enough that she can throw a man larger than her when she knew nothing about self-defence before. I also had some difficulty following the action at certain points. The characters weren't quite my cup of tea either (I didn't believe/like most of them) but that won't bother everyone.

Overall I would say a good read for a younger crowd, but older teens and adults are not likely to find it terribly enthralling. It's definitely not in the same class as The Hunger Games but fans of The Selection will likely enjoy it.

By Alicia
I've thought long and hard about how I would rate this book. It wasn't easy because there was a huge mixture of good and bad points about it. I almost thought I just wouldn't give a review because I really dislike complaining about books, but this book evoked so many emotions in me--both good and bad--that I couldn't NOT share my thoughts.

What I liked:

First of all, the cover! It didn't influence my rating, but it really is a gorgeous cover. I love Clarissa Yeo's work.

Rebecca Rode's writing style. The sentence fluency, word choice, grammar, etc. was all well done and flowed nicely. The description was also well done, except for a couple of parts that left me confused. For example, at one point Treena gets handcuffed, but then a couple of minutes later, the guards tell her to put her hands up (and she does), but there's no explanation of her getting out of her cuffs (unless I missed it...).

The concept. I liked the idea of a society where you're defined by a number. Although the story had themes common in other dystopians--which is to be expected--I liked the moral of the story.

What I didn't like:

The writing of the characters.I think this was my biggest problem with the book. It's not that I didn't like the characters as people. It's just that they lacked depth. Vance was okay. I got a feel for who he was for the most part.

But Treena? She could have practically been any random girl. She doesn't have likes or dislikes, quirks, or really anything that sets her apart. Sure, she has a past, but she lacks any other defining qualities. She's supposed to be this smart girl who everyone expected to score really high, but the author didn't show us her intelligence. She's not exactly helpless, but she really only gets out of situations by chance, not by using the smarts she's supposed to have.

None of the other characters seemed particularly unique except the empress. The others are pretty forgettable.

The inconsistencies. There were several points in the book where things just didn't match up. It was little things, but they mattered. I already mentioned how Treena magically got out of her handcuffs (seriously, did I miss that part?), but there were other things.

How about how Treena only has, like, one training session, and suddenly she's an expert at fighting trained guards? She's only a soldier for a week, and Vance tells her they're skipping the training sessions a few times, so how many times could she have really trained? Yet she's thankful that "Vance showed her how to fight." At another point, she comes face-to-face with a guard who aims a stunner at her, but in the next sentence, she jumps him from behind. How does that work?

There were other things that didn't make a whole lot of sense, either. Like how she ducks out the back of a crowded room, and one of the guards chases after her. Everyone is so surprised that she "got past the guards," and she was "so clever." It was apparently a miracle that no one stopped her, even though there were no guards between her and the door she was after. Did I miss the part where she "cleverly" snuck out the back and "miraculously" got past the guards?

Or, how did she get around the government building so easily? It's like they didn't have security cameras...

Little things like this got to me. Maybe I just misinterpreted some of it...

The whole nutrition pill/smuggler thing. I couldn't wrap my head around why people couldn't have food in NORA. It was illegal to have potatoes and apples. What??? Also, I couldn't understand how ONE nutrition pill was supposed to sustain you as if it was a full meal...

I also figured out one of the major plot points by the rating ceremony, which was at the very beginning, yet the characters don't pick up on it... How couldn't they? It's so obvious, there was no question about it.

I know I have a lot of complaints here. It's not that the book was bad. It just felt like some parts could have been planned out better or that beta readers should have caught them.

If you can get past the little things, then you'll enjoy this book if you're a fan of the dystopian genre.

Whale Hunt In The Desert: The Secret Las Vegas Of Superhost Steve Cyr, by Deke Castleman

In pre-1990s Las Vegas, casino marketing executives were all cut from the same cloth; sharply-dressed and smooth-talking with street-savvy. They rose through the ranks of operations--dealer, floorman, pit boss, shift boss and casino manager. When it was time to leave the trenches, they went "upstairs" into the executive offices, where they hosted a handful of established players according to the unwritten rules of old-school Vegas. Then Steve Cyr showed up.

Review
Whale Hunt in the Desert one of the best gambling books I've seen in a long time. --John Grochowski, Chicago Sun-Times

Read about the Best Whale Chaser in Vegas
By Sarasota Suncoast Reviewer
I love gambling and think that I was born with the gambling gene. This book attracted me at first because I wanted to get the chance to see what it was like to be a "whale" (the biggest gamblers with the largest bankrolls) and work with a whale.

Steve Cyr is known to be the best casino host in Las Vegas. In this book you will get the chance to see what the life of a revered casino host is like and that nothing is off-limits to a Vegas "Whale". You will also understand what a cut-throat type of business casino hosting is.

Shocking and eye opening in some spots--this book is a fast and fun read. If gambling is not in your blood, it may not be as enjoyable a book as you might like.

Wondered what it was like to be a high roller?
By Tennis Bum
If you want to read about Las Vegas's highest of high rollers, "whales," and what a casino will do to keep them happy, then this book won't fail to satisfy. Along the way you'll meet Steve Cyr, a young Turk casino host. A host is the casino's employee whose job it is to look after the big players and to keep them happy and, more importantly, keep them coming back and gambling more and more.

Much of the book is built around Cyr and his style (his style can be both inspiring and annoying). Cyr is about 70% time-share/condo salesperson and 35% cruise director and 10% Kato Kaelin (yeah, he's 115%). But the book is more than Cyr and his successful effort to modernize the way casinos market to high rollers. You'll meet some of the whales themselves. You'll find out about the mini-palaces casinos have built just for them. And one subject usually kept off the record is covered: do casinos provide sex to their top players?

The book is not a superficial People Magazine of famous celebs who frequent Vegas. It's about both sides of the table, the whales and the casinos and hosts who harpoon them. The dark side of gambling is offered up as gamblers spin downward out of control, losing millions. There are plenty of details and that's what really distinguishes this book. Other books have touched on the fantasy of the high roller's life. Such as Lifestyles of a High Roller, Anderson's Burning the Tables, Rubin's Comp City and a couple specials on the Travel Channel, but nothing has offered up the depth or detail of Whale Hunt.

The only thing missing from the book is more.

Whatever Mother Says...: A True Story of a Mother, Madness and Murder (St. Martin's True Crime Library), by Wensley Clarkson

To neighbors, she was the brave single mother...

Raising her five kids alone in a rundown section of Sacramento, Theresa Cross Knorr seemed like the ultimate survivor. But her youngest daughter, 16-year-old Terry, told police another story: one almost too terrible to believe.

But accused of imprisoning her children in a house of horrors...

According to Terry, Theresa--no longer the petite brunette she once was--had turned insanely jealous of her pretty eldest daughters and enlisted the help of her two teenaged sons in a vicious campaign against their sisters.

Of beating, torturing and killing her own flesh and blood...

Terry's gruesome tale told how Theresa had drugged, handcuffed and shot 16-year-old Suesan, allowing her wounds to fester, until the day she ordered her sons to burn their sister alive. Next, Terry said Theresa severely beat 20-year-old Sheila and then locked her in a stifling broom closet, so that when the girl finally starved to death, her brothers dumped her body in the same desolate mountain range where they had cremated Suesan.

She could be one of the most evil murderesses of our time...

It took Terry five agonizing years to convince authorities to investigate her grisly accounts of burning flesh, starvation and torture...of a mother from hell, so sadistic and so deranged, she had become her children's own executioner.

Wensley Clarkson Whatever Mother Says ... is the true story of a mother, madness and murder.

Very sad,made me cry
By Ellen
I read this book a couple of years ago under another title which I think was called The Worst Mother In The World. This is the only true crime book that I have ever read that actually made me cry.I consider myself pretty hardened to this type of reading but I felt so sorry for the children in this family having such an evil, nutcase of a mother. It's little wonder that children growing up in the violent and sick environment that these poor kids had turn out to be killers and develop severe mental problems. The thing that gets me,and you hear this all the time,is that although friends and neigbours and even family members knew that this mother was a sandwich short of a picnic - nobody tries to help these poor kids! This woman was a manipulative sadistic woman so consumed with jealousy that her daughters were prettier than her that she tortured them killing two out of three in the end.The worst thing is,is that she enlisted the help of her own sons to get rid of the bodies! These children endured severe beatings, starvation followed by mountains of food fed forcefully until they were sick and made to eat the vomit, they were drugged, made to drink enough alcohol until they passed out and eventually one of the daughters was shot by her own mother while being held in place by her two brothers because her mother was a lousy shot an didn't want to miss. Not only was she shot but as she didn't die,her mother nursed her back to health.I won't tell you how the bullet was removed as I don't want to ruin the next set of unimaginable events for you. This book is not one of the most well written that I have read but the story makes up for that.Very sad,Your worst nightmare come true,I only hope that someone does to the mother what she did to her kids.Makes you gasp. Will stay in your mind.A must for all true crime readers but not for the faint hearted.

WHATEVER MOTHER SAYS
By A Customer
This book is EXCELLENTLY well written. No dry parts at all. I couldn't put it down. All about the WORST mother ever! It gives you a look at each of her children, and each of her husbands (she was actually acquitted of murdering her first one!), as well as telling the story of her, from childhood.
I thought it was wonderful the way, he wrote about her children, especially the daughters. It made me feel as though I knew them, and it made me feel great empathy for them. They had their own hopes and dreams, and it's incredibly sad they couldn't live to have freedom.
I CAN'T BELIEVE ANYONE WOULD GIVE THIS BOOK LESS THAN 5 STARS, JUST BECAUSE WENSLEY CLARKSON DIDN'T WAIT UNTIL AFTER HER TRIAL, OR THAT IT WAS "YUCKY" Really! What do you expect from a true crime book? If you have delicate sensitivities you shouldn't read this genre.
Well researched. Excellent book. One of the most gripping I've read in a while.

Family cruelty in its' most shocking form!
By A Customer
My name is Detective David Lundberg. I am in the book. The author claimed that I acted as an agent when the media came calling on Teri. I was only trying to protect her. I did not go after a movie deal as alledged in the book. I was only trying to help the victim of one of the worst crimes in America, from being victimized again in the crazed world of Hollywood and mass media. I just want the truth to be known. My e-mail address is Dave_Lundberg@MSN.COM Thank You

The Wanderess, by Roman Payne

A gothic mystery novel and story of passion and romance set against the backdrop of a timeless Mediterranean landscape, The Wanderess tells of the notorious adventurer Saul and his passion for the beautiful Saskia, a mysterious young orphan girl whom he meets and vows to protect as his child.

When Saul's pursuit of pleasure and fortune gets tangled with the quest of this "Wanderess" for her long-lost friend and her own fortune, the two find themselves on a picaresque path that leads them through Spain, France, Italy and beyond; their adventures weaving them deeper and deeper into a web of jealous passion, intrigue, betrayal, and finally, murder.

The Wanderess is a love story, a novel of heroism, friendship and romance, portraying the lives of two unsettled vagabonds led by their own strange desires, mutual obsessions, and one single fortune.

The Wanderess is the fifth novel by Roman Payne, an author who pushes the boundaries of poetic language, imagination, sexual charge, and psychological mystery-his prose bearing always a timeless quality that transports the reader to far-away lands and times.

About the Author
Roman Payne (b. 1977) is an American-born novelist who immigrated to France in 1999. He is known for his poetic language, his return to classicism (what he terms "heroic" prose), and for his tales of initiation and wandering. Although he writes in English, his life in Paris, speaking entirely French, has influenced his work giving his prose an unusual Latinate quality. He is heavily influenced by Homeric Epic, as well as 18th and 19th Century French and European literature. A list of his works can be found at: romanpayne.com. He is published by ModeRoom Press in Europe and Aesthete Press in America.

Take a journey and fall in love all over again or for the first time
By Anna L. Walls
The Wanderess is told as if the main character was narrating the story, a unique point of view in my experience, it was beautifully told. I have been to quite a few different states with Colorado as the center of my world of experience, but I've never been overseas anywhere. Saul and Saskia wander, either chasing each other or together, through France, Spain, Northern Italy, and beyond, and unlike some books I've read, I was able to enjoy the journey as well as the drama of Saskia's drive to see the fulfillment of her prophecy. Of Saul's stubbornness as he determined to keep just as many secrets as Saskia did, even the one that would see the fruition of her prophecy that much sooner. I was drawn into their love, the passion and the turmoil of it, as it progressed through the growing pains of jealousy and trust, as it was tested by betrayal and entrapment. And best of all, I was able to see the quaint countryside and it's colorful people of all varieties. The world Roman Payne allowed me to see was full of life of all types, all types; do you know how hard that is to do? From peasants and common workers to aging actresses, from charlatans to royalty. They were all there. From summer in Paris to the dry heat of Tripoli.

An exciting novel of romance and intrigue
By Jasmine Ayres
This is really a great book! It has all the elements that won't let me put in down without finding out what happens next--travel with a little history included, romance, conflict & intrigue, & poignant resolution. It is sensitive & sometimes fun, but also touches on many of life's important questions regarding honor, fidelity, trust, sexuality & familial connection. It has an out of the ordinary timelessness where the reader can settle on his/her own idea of the epoch, harkening back to life in earlier centuries & yet with essentially modern language & idioms. This is a story that will be remembered.

A fantastical and pleasurable read.
By M. Alcantara
I finished this book tonight. It is a great, mysterious novel with passages of amorous beauty and noble manners. There are times when my concern with the central love affair seemed to lull, but then the story turned and exploded forward like a thoroughbred from the gate. My only qualm is with the fate of --- (you'll know who I mean), which differentiates this from a moral parable, and makes it a reflection of a certain life; advancing by cruelty and accident at times, or a flower strewn path. I'll be thinking about this story as I sleep tonight!
