About the Author

Dean Nimmer, Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, has exhibited his work in over two hundred solo and group exhibitions across the United States, Europe, China, Japan and Australia. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Smith Art Museum, Harvard University; Museum Haus Katsuya, Japan and in the collection of the New York Public Library. Dean has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Massachusetts Artists Foundation, Mass Cultural Council, Jasper Whiting Foundation and the Kao Foundation in Washington, DC.

He is the 2010 winner of the Distinguished Teaching of Art Award given by the 16,000-member College Art Association and honored with the 2011 Distinguished Alumnus Award in the fields of Art and Art Education by the University of Wisconsin.

He is also listed in the current edition of Who's Who in American Art. Dean is the author of Art from Intuition, now in its fifth printing.

Dean's goal in teaching is to inspire artists to find the myriad of accessible possibilities for creating original artworks that are inspired by the powers of imagination and an enthusiasm for the process of making art.

The paint is calling!

I've been waiting for this book! Chock full of exercises designed to get the creativity flowing and show you how to re-frame your thinking. Exactly as the title says, the book provides the artist with ideas to get you moving in your own direction, prompting you to put hand to page and START the process. It is not a how-to with step by step instructions for a finished product. It is a means of inspiration to get your personal process underway with clear illustrations of how to take the first step and inspirational works by other artists using a variety of media and techniques. Use it as an idea book when you are at a loss as to how to begin, or you think you are pressed for time but want to do something, anything, to be creative. You will not be disappointed. This is a complimentary follow up to Dean's earlier book, Art From Intuition, another great collection of motivating ideas. I've used ideas from that book with all ages and I plan to do the same with Creating Abstract Art.

Ideas, Art History, and Perspectives

I was looking forward to this book because I found Art From Intuition so helpful and full of fresh ideas. This book has lots of ideas, but the exercises lack development and depth. Nimmer offers up 40 "exercises", the vast majority of which require the reader to design his/her own course of action using his idea as a jumping off point. Many of the ideas are based on art movements from the last century, so you get a good art history lesson. The fourth chapter offers perspectives on abstract art from a great variety of contemporary artists. The few exercises the DO give you specific instructions are fabulous! The scope of this book is large; I would have preferred to see fewer exercises with more developed ideas and suggestions, and more examples (I know, I know, it's not about what the finished work LOOKS like - still, it is helpful to see how others tackled the exercise).

This is an idea book, with a broad view of abstract art. It is not a how-to book. For the experienced artist in search of ideas, or a less experienced artist who wants some art history and perspectives on abstract art, this book is totally worth the price! The book delivers "Ideas and Inspiration for Passionate Art Making", as per the title, but relies on the reader to develop the ideas and passion. Which is what you have to do in art making no matter what.

Like Finding Lightning in a Bottle!

I am a retired psychologist who used to do clinical and educational consultations for many years in a variety of settings. After retiring, I began dabbling in photography, printmaking and painting and sought out a number of highly accomplished professional artists for instruction in these areas with the goal of developing my skills as a photographic artist. In my opinion, Dean Nimmer's book, "Creating Abstract Art"', is an excellent example of an educational text which can also serve as a reference for both students and teachers of abstract art. Additionally, it can serve as a sourcebook for professional artists looking for stimulating ideas and exercises to further their creative expression. "Creating Abstract Art" is a very well-written book by a highly accomplished professional educator and owning a copy will likely prove to be of benefit to almost every student, teacher, and artist willing to consider the ideas and complete the exercises it contains.
DISCLAIMER: I have been a student in Professor Nimmer's painting courses for the past year and a few samples of my work appear in this book. Mário A. Perini is associate professor of linguistics at Pontifíca Universidade Católica, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Another Mario Perini's great work

There have been many attempts at describing Brazilian pronunciation, but most of them have not been as accurate as this Mário Alberto Perini's work. The pronunciation explained here is that of Belo Horizonte city and it is very close to what we consider ''accentless Brazilian Portuguese''. The most marvelous feature is the real description of the pronunciation of NH. In Brazilian Portuguese NH is read as a nasal glide (Y~, that is, as Y in English ''yes'', with a nasalized y, that is, y pronounced through the nose). Brazilian NH is definitely not read like Spanish Ñ or the English sequence N+Y (as in ''canyon''). It is wonderful Brazilian linguists have finally recognized this unique characteristic of Brazilian Portuguese. (For more information on this Brazilian sound try ''Fonética e fonologia do Português'' by Thaïs Cristófaro Silva). Don't miss this pronunciation workbook! It is great! And I just love the dialogs! They are very amusing!

This product fills a hole in Portuguese instruction.

This is an excellent resource for someone who is learning Brazilian Portuguese. By concentrating specifically on pronunciation, one of the more difficult areas of learning Portuguese is made more accessible. Pronunciation is a killer and is very difficult, especially for the many students who already know some Spanish. I have noticed a great improvement in the student to whom I am teaching an independent study in Porguguese since she began using this system to practice.

I agree with the reviewer who was annoyed by the music and the woman's voice, but that's part of audio language learning, it seems. I simply ripped the CD's to the harddrive of my computer and skip these sections fairly easily.

It is important to note that this is not a course for learning Portuguese. This is a way to work on Brazilian pronunciation for those who are studying Portuguese and do not get to speak with native speakers often. It is especially useful if you are using a traditional grammar approach to learning.

One drawback is, indeed, the price. Forty-five dollars does seem awfully steep but it's a case of supply and demand. There is simply no other product out there that fills this need in Portuguese language instruction.

For the next generation

I enjoyed these books when I was a child. It came in quite handy when my nephew was a little boy and hated reading. I believe the key to creating a love of reading is to give them a subject they will enjoy. He loved dirtbikes. So Ralph S. Mouse it would be. He read all three of the series. Now that he has a baby boy, I thought I better buy them in hardback to make sure I will have copies to last another generation.

Great classic book

Great classic book. The book jacket does not match the one pictured and I ordered it twice trying to get the correct book jacket to complete our set. The new book is 'updated' along with the illustrations which have lost some of their charm. My boys (3 & 5) love Ralph's adventures!

About the Author
Paula is president of Just ASK Publications & Professional Development and an ASK Group Senior Consultant. She lives in Alexandria, Virginia. She is the author of Why Didn't I Learn This in College?, The 21st Century Mentor's Handbook, Instruction for All Students, and Leading the Learning. Paula holds a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from the University of Oklahoma, a Master of Education with an emphasis on Special Education from the University of North Florida, and has completed post-graduate course work in administration and educational leadership at the University of Virginia, Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State University, and George Mason University. She was recently awarded an honorary Doctorate of Education by MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Illinois, as well as the Outstanding Achievement Award for Excellence in Education by the College of Education at the University of Oklahoma. She has been a history and social studies teacher, a physical education teacher, a kindergarten teacher, a special education teacher, coordinator of special education programs, a school administrator, and professional development specialist in school districts across the country.

I chose this because of the number of students I have in my classroom that are from different cultures. What a shock (in a good way!) when I learned that it was not only about English Language Learners, but ALL different kinds of students (At risk, struggling, GT, etc.) The best thing about the book is that I now have strategies to try in my classroom. Very helpful book.

The lives of ten of Okinawa's greatest karate masters.

Grand Master Shoshin Nagamine's Tales of Okinawa's Great Masters was published in Japanese a few years ago. The English translation, by Patrick McCarthy, recounts the lives and histories of ten of Okinawa's greatest masters. Nagamine Sensei spent a lifetime researching these masters and either training with them or interviewing their families and students. Tode Sakugawa, Sokon Matsumura, Kosaku Matsumora, Anko Itosu, Gichin Funakoshi, Chotoku Kyan, Choki Motobu, Kanryo Higaonna and Ankichi Arakaki, are just a few of the luminaries profiled in the book.
History buffs will also appreciate the numerous photographs and illustrations from Nagamine Sensei's personal collection.
This book crosses over all karate styles. Whether you are a student of Shorin-Ryu, Goju-Ryu or Shotokan, there is so much here for you. And for students of Matsubayashi-Ryu, the style founded by Nagamine Sensei in 1947, this book is must reading.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give it a 20!

A Personal Glimpse Inside Okinawan Karate's Complexities

I am among those who are very pleased to see so many works by Okinawan martial artists become available in the English language. In "Tales of Okinawa's Great Karate Masters", translated by Patrick McCarthy, Shoshin Nagamine offers an honest look at the roots of the art he practiced and taught for over 50 years. This is not a 'how-to' karate book, there are no technical pictures although there are some decent historical pictures of people and documents, and some illustrative ones of the author, Nagamine.
If you have Nagamine's first book, translated into English as "The Essence of Okinawan Karate" and focusing mainly upon the 17 kata of Matsubayashi Ryu Shorin Ryu Karate (an Itosu-ha lineage), this second work of his provides the literary heart of the art. It does not dwell merely on the roots of Nagamine's style, but includes fascinating information on a myriad of styles, teachers, Okinawan history, and karate folklore. There is plenty of new information: this is not simply a 're-do' of old data. One chapter for instance, focuses on Okinawa's Native art, a form of wrestling called "Tegumi". Book includes endnotes, and an Appendixed article by Nagamine called "Okinawan Karate and World Peace".

This book was written by the late Grandmaster Nagimine. Founder of Matsubayashi Ryu. The style I practice. This books is for all martial artist whoes karate originate from the Ryukyu Islands. It is a history of great Karate Master's of the past. Book filled with tales and pictures that should be liked by student and historian alike. As usual, McCarthy does a good job translating for us westerners. A must read for all martial artist.
