May completely alter your view of ethnicity and America itself

This is a highly readable, groundbreaking book that exposes the shallowness of many of the ethnic stereotypes we still hold in America. The core of the book critiques what Steinberg calls "the Horatio Alger myth of ethnic success" which argues that the success (or lack thereof) of ethnic groups in America is the result of cultural values. Horatio Alger was a popular author who wrote books in which the heroes overcame adversity with hard-work, common sense, and determination, i.e. middle class values. American society praises certain ethnic groups as "ethnic heroes" because it is claimed that they overcame so much and achieved success by virtue of having more American, middle-class values than other cultures.

Values-based stereotypes include "Jewish people are successful because they value education" or "Japanese-Americans are hard-working and determined, and this is why they are successful". There is no debate that some ethnic groups have been more successful than others or were successful sooner than others, but Steinberg argues (and in my opinion, proves) that these differences in outcome arose from differences in circumstances both before and after they came to America, not differences in cultural values.

First, Steinberg gives a thorough history of how America came to be so ethnically diverse (it's not because the American founders valued pluralism and equality for diverse peoples, though this is the myth we tell ourselves). Next, he demonstrates just how pervasive the "cultural values = success" trope is amongst social scientists, journalists, historians, politicians, and regular Americans. He debunks this myth by using primary sources and statistical analysis to demonstrate that groups differed in circumstances (not values) which led to different economic outcomes. For example, Irish female immigrants were more likely to become maids, not because they lacked the pride that prevented Italians and Jews from serving others, but because they were more likely to be single and had to provide for themselves. He also provides a devastating account of how the North and South colluded during the post-Civil War period to keep blacks living in near-slavery conditions and prevent their economic advancement.

Steinberg also exposes the reason why we hold onto the ethnic myth: so we can have ethnic heroes to validate our disdain for the unsuccessful ethnic villains (African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, etc). We want to believe that anyone can achieve the American Dream, but we fail to understand why so many did not and still cannot.

About the Author

Liz, Fane, Peggy, Martin, MI5 & the curious case of the cyber saboteur

This 7th in former MI5 Director General Stella Rimington's "Liz Carlyle" series takes on a case of cyber-sabotage connected to a joint US/UK defense program that's so top-secret not even Liz and her cohorts at MI5 and 6 knew of it until an old acquaintance from Russia turns up to warn Liz that there's a saboteur lurking somewhere in the program who's working for another country. But what country? Dunno.

And might that have something to do with why and how that rogue drone over the Nevada desert suddenly started engaging in destructive acts its programmers never programmed it to do?

Before it's all over, not only the US and UK but also Russia, Switzerland, France and both Koreas will have become involved, and the cast of characters, good and bad, will have grown to the point where this reader found herself having a hard time keeping up with who they all were and what country or character or plot thread they were connected to.

Meanwhile, back on the romantic front, Martin's still very much in the picture and this time poor old Charles doesn't even merit a mention. Hmmmm.

Not among my favorites in this series. But a good read nonetheless. Will probably have greater appeal to those more cyber-savvy than I.

I have read all of Stella Rimington's novels with great relish, except this one.
It took me no more than one page or two to realize that she didn't write this one.
The individual incidents are almost vulgar in their simplicity, the subtlety is gone, so is the heroine's usually penetrating personality and intelligence, as well as Rimington's notoriously knowledgeable spy craft. The heroine, as well as the other characters, are now shallow.Both Stella and Liz are absent here.

Besides the nonsensical main argument of a Russian spy who -risking his own life- warns the UK-USA out of the kindness of his soul, there are various ridiculous mistakes such as monitoring email communication from an important and very secret defense institution (MoD), but "..we simply wanted to keep track on who was being emailed, not what the emails said." So what was being leaked was not important, and the emails could have been only asking for a sexual encounter!!

I hope Ms. Rimington goes back to writing, although experience tells me that when a phantom writer has being hired the towel has been thrown in.

As it is, I prefer James Bond's films' female boss, even if she is in MI6.

Convincing

The Genever Trap plot carries all the conviction that one would expect from the former head of MI5. Stella Remington writes well and perhaps, one day in the future it will be possible to see copies of her reports while working in MI5. My guess they would be masterly examples of clarity and subtle insinuations on matters of which she may have disapproved.

On July 9, 1963, Alex Graham began the comic strip with which he is most closely associated: Fred Basset. The strip still continues in the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, and a book of the Fred cartoons is published every year.

Fred's First Fifty

Simple is best.

In 1963 Alex Graham's comic strip "Fred Basset" first appeared in London newspapers and the hound was an instant hit with readers in the UK and in many other parts of the world. In the early days Fred was a strange looking chap but he was a basset in every way and from his viewpoint life was about food, relaxing and getting into trouble he wasn't even looking for.

This hardbound book is a sample of the 18,000 comic strips published over the course of the last fifty years and it gives a fair glimse into one hound's life. Three strips are featured from all of the years starting with 1963 through to 2013. Fred's world hasn't changed that much and he deals with the same issues as always (Bassets, are not happy with changes of any sort!) and the strip still retains it's charm and wit with a hound's heart after all these years.

Fred Basset, is a family affair as after Alex Graham passed away in the 1990's his daughter Arran Graham and her husband Alistair provide the ideas Michael Martin finishes it up with his artwork. The quality of this great comic has never faltered and it remains a wonderful treasure for it's humble readers.

Fred, truly a dog among dogs!

After The Chicago Tribune killed off "Fred Basset" for tripe that better fitted their demographics target, I was forced to read good old Fred from an internet subscription. (Older annuals are still available on eBay.) The 2004 Orion book is available from Amazon and Amazon Marketplace. Buy it now and buy the 2005 edition before it sells out. Unfortunately, the annual does not reprint the Sundays and not even all the year's worth of dailies. But, still a great collection!
