A good place to start with UE4 and Visual Scripting

A good start for anyone new to Unreal Engine and Blueprints. There is sample code for 8 chapters and color images in PDF if you want them from the publisher. At the time of the books writing the engine version is 4.7.6 and now it is at version 4.9.x. That is not an issue and as a user of UE4 the changes between 4.7 and 4.9 for Blueprints and what the book covers are not significant. I suspect the book will still remain applicable for sometime, maybe a couple or more years. The short version of my review is that the book is the best starting place if you like books, want to learn UE4 and Blueprints, and anticipate this being a step or two in learning UE4. It will not make you an expert in game design or game programming. The chapters begin with simple objects a cylinder and materials in UE4. I appreciate that it pushes the reader into materials which is a complex subject, but what is in the book serves as a good introduction. There is a chapter on UI for the player, which is nice to have, again serving as a strong introduction. It later jumps into AI, navmesh's, and behavior trees. All serving as good starting points and helps keep the flow of the content in the book and what you are making in the editor. Other parts of completing a game are covered like pausing and saving, along with the book ending on packaging for release to a platform. So, I have enjoyed the book. For me it might have been a little better if it covered more than a first person shooter project. Also, at least on a Mac the final project in chapter 8 has some issues with hit detection where not all the shots are registered. While the event is mentioned early on in the book it is possible my criticism is not fair since I jumped to the end and opened the project and found the issue.

Finally! Somebody wrote a good book on Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) Blueprints Visual Scripting. This book is well organized and moves at the right pace. It is all about the First Person Shooter (FPS) genre, but much of what you learn could be used in any game you dream up. It starts from the FPS template and builds it into something much closer to a real FPS game, with targets, projectiles, object interaction, HUD, AI Enemies, and Game Stats. Code and project files are available from the Packt web-site, but it is better to create your own stuff from the instructions in the book. This book is not a complete reference and it does not need to be, because Epic has put all of there docs and a ton of video tutorials online. Learning Blueprints Visual Scripting is more fun that a lot of games I have played. If you are new to game programming this a good place to start, because you can get satisficing results quickly. If you have been programming software for a long time like I have, check this out because it is a refreshing and fun way to bring your ideas to life. Epic deserves a lot of credit for creating a great toolset and giving it away for free. If you look at the entire UE4 toolset it can be overwhelming, because there is so many tools for so many things. This book does a great job of keeping you focused on building a game and not getting to bogged down in trying to cover everything that UE4 can do. My complements to Brenden Sewell and Epic Games.

This a great book. Unreal Blueprints is quite a topic and getting it into a book with clear examples is exactly what was needed for the Unreal Engine. There are not many books published on Unreal Engine 4 and hopefully this will be the start of many good quality books. The book covers the essentials of Blueprints and makes for an easy read. Follow all the topics and build the content as per the book and you will learn a lot.

His energetic, distinctive renditions of the author's quirky and humorous cast of characters-including a priest, a lawyer, a personal assistant, a tarot card reader and a singer-make up for Baldacci's silly plot twists of reunited lovers, a thief on board the train and the avalanche that has "everyone contemplating their demise."

A Delightful Christmas Story

Here we have a delightful holiday love story with "SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE" written all over it. It has all of the ingredients: the lure and lore of transcontinental train travel; Christmas music; humor; romance; mystery; a huge snow storm (read "special effects"); a cast of pleasantly interesting characters; and an ending chock full of surprises. What's not to like?
The story itself has been well outlined by the Amazon.com reviewer, and it is a good story well told. It contains no foul language, no overt sex, and no violence. The novel's' secondary characters are almost uniformly well-intentioned, friendly, blessed with common sense and politically correct. (The workers on the train all work hard, love their jobs and always know what to do; the "wheelchair lady" has MS but "never lets it get her down" and "is full of good spirits despite her disability"; etc.; etc.) All of the secondary characters, that is, except for the lawyer who is utterly despicable, and who quickly gets his comeuppance!! The main characters, of course, have predictable minor flaws (like Tom Langdon's anger, which usually surfaces when an injustice is about to be done), but we never doubt that they are all fundamentally "good" people. In short, there is nothing in this novel that would ever initiate a "letter to the publisher" by a distraught reader (except, perhaps, by the Bar Association). Although none of this is bad in itself (this IS a Christmas story, after all), I found myself wishing that Tom had been more like Philip Marlowe and less like Jimmy Stewart in "It's A Wonderful Life". I think it would have made this a much more interesting story with a much more powerful ending.
However, I don't believe that this was ever meant to be a penetrating work of literature that would reveal surprising truths about the human condition. Rather, I think it was meant to be, and is, a light diversion that will leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy; a Christmas cordial that is meant to be slowly sipped, enjoyed, and then reluctantly put aside. It is a real escape from what currently passes for "entertainment" on TV and in the movie theaters.
To use another metaphor, this is a sweet holiday bonbon!

The Magic of Christmas and The Romance of Train Travel

If you are looking for a light, feel-good read that reaffirms the magic of Christmas and the fact that sometimes long-deferred dreams do come true, this is the book for you. Author David Baldacci shows us quite clearly that it's not the destination that matters, but how you enjoy the journey.
Tom Langdon sets off on a cross-country train trip at Washington, D.C. and plans to arrive in L.A. for Christmas. Having reached middle age, it is time to do some soul-searching and rethinking of life goals, and what better place than the peaceful journey a train can provide. As one of the characters so succintly tells our hero, "....most folk who ride trains could care less where they're going. For them it's the journey itself and the people they meet along the way...they're looking for some friendship, a warm body to talk to. People don't rush on a train, because that's not what trains are for."
What Tom does encounter is a less than peaceful situation plus a mix of interesting characters. A Christmas Eve avalanche, an on-board wedding, people who are not who they say they are, a ghost from the past, and a lot of Amtrak trivia will keep you interested as you travel cross-country on Tom's trip of self-examination. Some may call the ending predictable, but a very clever twist took me completely by surprise and made the journey even more interesting in retrospect.
This isn't great literature but it is an entertaining holiday read that makes this reader want to call Amtrak immediately to board the next train out of town. Great fun that I'm glad I found under my Christmas tree this year!

Like Holiday Candy...

...maybe it's not nutritiously substantial, but it sure is tasty!
David Baldacci's The Christmas Train is a light-hearted tale that clips along at a jolly pace, much like the vehicle that carries its eclectic cast of characters. The ensemble hails from just about every temperment and every walk of life, and though they're not terribly "deep", they are interesting to watch. Much like one's travels in reality, Baldacci brings the group (with us) together, allows us to see their initial facades, and in some cases digs a little deeper. For spice, he adds a splash of intrigue to the story in the form of a none-too-complicated mystery. It's a fun diversion, but the story's focal point remains interpersonal interplay.
One truly refreshing aspect of this book is the complete absence of any objectionable material - the book could be easily rated G (or stretch to a PG for one honeymooning couple). It's nice to know there are authors who can write an enjoyable novel without heavy doses of profanity, sex, or violence. Who wants to read about that stuff at Christmastime anyway? ;-)
Worth the ride, The Christmas Train provides the reader with a warm holiday treat!

~~Cole Slaw/Corn Bread with some Quiche in between~~

Having vision problems, I am always looking for the recipes that contain the green veggies. This book has 12 recipes in it and they run the gamut from Coleslaw to Cornbread with Quiche in between.

The one for the Dijon Broccoli and Chicken Strips is the one that I have made so far. Prep time of 15 minutes and cook time of 15 so an even division of my time. I appreciate the fact that the author has listed low sodium chicken broth in the recipe. Dijon, soy sauce, olive oil and garlic. I don't see how it could get much better with those ingredients...

A Must Read Book!

Going into the last week of school with 6th graders knowing that grades have all been submitted and their fate has been decided is rough. They are ready for summer and basically nothing educational will keep their attention. Then I stumbled upon this book. I figured why not try it as I knew my students liked scary movies.

First you read the book.... Ryan's journal of events that are taking place AND THEN you watch a video from Sarah online. These are 3-8 minute videos made by "Sarah" a teenage girl. They are not state of the art videos but they are enough to get a rise out of the kids. It is not too scary just every once in awhile something unexpected jumps out at you. My students could not get enough of this book. They would listen for hours and beg to watch the videos over and over again. They would beg for me to stop reading so we read... A LOT!

This book was so good that soon the 6th grade class next door was wondering what we were up to and wanted in on the action. So... they started reading. Then the third class joined us and then friends at another school. I am telling you... this book is a life saver! We ended up reading the first 4 books of the series in the last 4 days of the school year!!! It was the most we read all year long. The kids went home after school and rewatched the videos with their parents. They were desperate to be the first one to solve the mystery.

This would be the perfect "Halloween" story as well. I saw somewhere that this was good for grades 4-6. I would agree. I think 7th graders may even enjoy it.

My 9 yr old son and I love these books

My 9 yr old son and I love these books, we read them together.The Skeleton Creek books keep him interested and he actually wants to read, which we all know what a challenge for a parent that can be. We enjoy the videos and the author keeps things suspenseful up to the end. We own all 4 of them and looking forward to ordering the 5th one. Good read for any age.

Great Series

My 11 year old daughter read the first Skeleton Creek book last year after finding it in the local library. She really liked it and asked about the others. The library was supposed to be getting them, but they kept not coming in. So, I got on here and found them for her, and she got the first 3 books for Christmas. I bought books for an 11 year old for Christmas? Yep, and she loved them! It was her favorite gift this year. She had them all read the day after, she just couldn't put them down. She kept asking me to read them so that I would know what kind of books she liked, and I finaly did and have to say I was quite surprised. They read quite well and keep you interested all they way through. I am looking forward to getting her the final book when it becomes available, and have to say I also am looking forward to reading it. The price I paid for these books was also great. I got them for $12 each and while I thought that was a little high, I changed my mind when I recieved them. They are very nicely bound hardcovers and they come in a neat plastic sleeve. They really make a nice addition to our little book collection. Another thing about these books is that they have companion videos that can be viewed on the internet as you read through the books they give you passwords to use to gain access. This is kinda neat, but the videos really aren't neccessary to grasp the book. My daughter however likes this feature. I would reccomend this series to anyone who has a child who loves to read! Or even just likes it. They may love it after reading these!
