great book series for beginning readers!!

My four year old son took an interest in wanting to read more than just words on a flash card. This book is great because my son relates to it with having a little sister, playing some of the same games splat does, and he likes that splat is his favorite 'color'. This book series is good at keeping it funny and interesting and has a good amount for a child to read. Which keeps my son wanting to read it every day resulting in him learning to read so far two books from this series on his own and now reads them to his little sister. will definitely buy this entire series and would recommend it to anyone teaching their kids to read for the first time.

AN INTERESTING CHRONOLOGICAL HISTORY OF ST. NICHOLAS AND CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS

William J. Federer is an American historian and writer, who has written books such as America's God and Country: Encyclopedia of Quotations, What Every American Needs to Know About the Qur'an - A History of Islam & the United States, Backfired: A Nation Born For Religious Tolerance No Longer Tolerates Religion, Treasury Of Presidential Quotations, etc. He also has a daily radio show, The American Minute, which summarized what happened on that day in history.

This 2003 book begins with St. Nicholas himself, and includes detailed accounts of all the stories and legends about him. Then it jumps rather abruptly to the 10th century, then the 13th, etc. While the book perhaps overdoes it in terms of quoting Presidential Christmas addresses (which actually make up the majority of the book), there is a lot of interesting historical material here.

Here are some quotations from the book:

"Martin Luther ... realized, though, the importance of traditions in people's lives, especially at Christmas time, so he sought to refocus the people's thought on the Christ Child, which in old German was pronounced 'Kris Kindl' (Christkindl), later pronounced 'Kris Kringle.' He taught Christ was the giver of all gifts and our gift-giving should be in remembrance of the great gifts Christ gave us." (Pg. 39)
"Some traditions have clearly pagan backgrounds, such as: 'Mistletoe,' which was hung up by the Druids to ward off evil spirits, which custom of kissing under it originated with the Celts and Teutons of northern Europe; the 'Yule Log,' was blessed by the Druids with a great ceremony at their winter feast, promising it would bring good luck if it could be kept burning during the entire winter solstice... 'Wassailing' was the practice of pouring wassail punch ... on their trees, fields, beehives, in an attempt to bring luck for the next year's harvests." (Pg. 47)
"The Greek symbol X is the abbreviation of Christos, and is the origin of X-mas as 'Christmas.'" (Pg. 55)
(President John Kennedy, on December 17, 1962) "...I was struck by the fact that in the far off continents Moslems, Hindus, Buddhists, as well as Christians, pause from their labors on the 25th day of December to celebrate the birthday of the Prince of Peace. There could be no more striking proof that Christmas is truly the universal holiday of all men." (Pg. 157)

I'm kind of a church history buff. Never knew any of this stuff. Particularly interesting is tracking how many of our Christmas customs evolved. Santa Claus lived in Turkey....who knew?

Needs a good copy-editor

Partway through I stopped reading. I was dismayed by a couple of problems. There are so many editorial errors that it become distracting. Although I learned to ignore the displaced commas and the sudden jumps in continuity, I eventually found it impossible to continue leaping back and forward in time and space, with many repetitions of some facts, and great gaps in others.
I'm sure Cresson knows his Cossacks. I urge him to get a good copy-editor to smooth out this little history. It would be well worth while.

"Don't neglect your body. Your own life, and the lives of others, depend on it."

I was very excited to read this. My excitement dwindled very quickly. I'm about halfway through, and am only powering through to the end to see if I can find more gems like these:

"Do not cover food with cling film, as after awhile it becomes sticky and unpleasant."

"We are powerless against disease, death, and nightmares, but our tidy cupboards stand as proof that we can, and do, control our own tiny corner of the universe."

Basically, if you want to read an extremely dramatized version of your to-do list, this book is definitely for you. However, I did learn that I should always clean my washbasin after I use it, and close my cereal packets neatly and firmly before putting them away. So, not a complete loss.

The author is great at communicating exactly what she believes you need to do (down to dictating the exact number of shoes and scarves you need in your wardrobe) but does not tackle HOW to do any of it. Platitudes and quotes from better authors are used to insufficiently explain WHY you should take her advice, but really there is extremely little content here. Very disappointed.

Useful Practical Advice

The author presents an easy to digest collection of practical advice in "L'art de la Simplicite: How to Live More with Less".

The suggestions are simple and make sense for anyone who's looking to see positive results. For example, spend less on short term treats, find out what's hidden away and get rid or donate them if they are not used or make us happy.

A very useful suggestion is take a realistic position and not say YES to every invitation for dinner and outings that come our way. Alternatively, limit the time you stay for dinner and that's a good way to connect with friends, but not blow the dining out budget.

Overall, Dominique Loreau has provided an excellent selection of advice on "how to live more with less".

This book has changed my life in every aspect! I have learned what simplicities to keep in my life and what to discard, how to take better care of myself, how to approach my eating, sleeping, mental well being all of which have heightened my creative side and my love for things I never thought I would ever have TIME to try. WOW!
I started by getting rid of so many things that had brought me down for years without realizing it.. I'm an interior designer and my feelings about how I design even have changed radically, to the better. I learned how important it is to simplify your money and in turn created a very budget that I live by now. Simplicity in all aspects of my life. Elegance, grace in everything I do. It is truly the secret to living life.
I really needed to read this book and truly believe an angel set it in front of me one day at a bookstore. Do yourself a favor, buy this, and practice her words. I guarantee you will feel a million times happier and filled with elegant grace.
