About the Author
DENNIS M. SULLIVAN is Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Idaho, Moscow. An award-winning author and researcher, he has done extensive work in several areas of simulation, including EM dosimetry, hyperthermia cancer treatment, nonlinear optics, and quantum semiconductors. In 1997, Dr. Sullivan won the R. P. W. King Award from the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society for the "Best Paper by a Young Investigator" for his paper "Z Transform Theory and FDTD Method." He is an IEEE Fellow, and is also the author of Quantum Mechanics for Electrical Engineers, published by Wiley-IEEE Press.

Error-ridden exposition on basic FDTD—good for ideas, not independently suitable for scientific work

I was hoping that the second edition of this book would correct the numerous typographic errors in the book unfortunately, it does not. Right in Section 1.1, you will find the typo E^{n + 1.2}, which should in fact be E^{n + 1/2}. This expression seems to have been copy and pasted several times, so the typo shows up many times. The typos in math only continue. Some of them you'd wonder about how it could have slipped past both the author and (maybe non-existent?) editors. The book also contains spelling errors and typos which are more difficult to spot. Most unfortunately, however, the code listings have typos as well. If you are a professional programmer, some of them will be easier to spot than others. In any case, you will need to be careful if you decide to copy or use the programs as a reference.
With that out of the way, the book is lacking in other ways.
Notation isn't, in my opinion, always explained clearly and used consistently. For example, we go from the PDEs of Maxwell's equations to electromagnetic field components with both superscripts and subscripts. It is somewhat clumsily explained after the first usage. An attentive reader will be able to figure it out, but one must be very careful to know (1) what all indexes mean, (2) if the author is using scaled or unscaled electric or magnetic field components (Sullivan switches, sometimes uses a tilde ~, sometimes does not), (3) if two adjacent letters represents a single variable or a multiplication between variables, and so on. Again, like the typos, none of it is a deal breaker.
Next, many concepts are not explained at all, or explained very tersely. For example, the first section basically says "take Maxwell's curl equations in free space, apply central difference approximations in time and space, and discretize the equations so they can be represented on a computer." Now, I cannot blame the author fully on this. One of the goals of the book was to be a to-the-point tutorial on implementing FDTD methods, and not have discussion devolve into minutiae of accuracy and convergence conditions, history, and so on. However, statements like "10 points per wavelength seems about good" aren't very satisfying, and will not lead the reader to implementing a system he or she can be confident is correct. In general, I find the presentation a bit too short.
Lastly, this isn't so bad, but may be difficult for others. This book assumes the reader is somewhat knowledgeable about C. The fundamental structure of the update equations are presented as short snippets of C code within the chapter, but then there is essentially a code dump at the end of each chapter. The code dumps are not explained, and it is up to the reader to infer the structure of them. Fortunately, no fancy tricks are usually employed, and it's relatively straightforward. However, the fact the listings are partial (with no syntactic hint as to where things were deleted) makes the listings a little less helpful.
With all of that said, what is unique about this book and who is it good for?
The fact the book is short and talks about frequency dependent media is interesting. Basic FDTD is implemented, but so are basic frequency-domain computations for frequency-dependent materials. The reader should be comfortable with working in the Fourier or Z domain. The book also ends with a little treat in one dimensional quantum simulation, though I find the exposition a little lacking. (The author is quick to advertise his other book precisely on this subject, however.)
I think this book is for someone who isn't interested in learning about the details of FDTD simulation, and is looking only to make a few programs to get the idea down. This book may also be used as an exercise book when read in combination with another, less implementation-focussed book.
In all, this short book really comes across as typeset lecture notes inside of a nice hard cover. I hope that the author or Wiley editors can do a better job cleaning up the errors in orthography and exposition in a third edition. This book could be the basis for an expedient and succinct treatment of FDTD implementation.
I would have rated this book 3 stars, but since it costs (at the time of writing) $85 and isn't of the expected written quality for the price, I must take off a star.
I think that John Schneider's lecture notes do, for the most part, a better job giving a quick introduction to the subject from both a theory and practice standpoint, and his notes are currently free of charge for anyone on his website.
