About the Author
As a professional development coordinator for the Conway, New Hampshire, School District, Penny Kittle acts as a K-12 literacy coach and directs new-teacher mentoring. In addition, she teaches writing at Conway's Kennett High School and in the Summer Literacy Institutes at the University of New Hampshire. Penny is the author and coauthor of numerous books with Heinemann including Book Love: Developing Depth, Stamina, and Passion in Adolescent Readers; Children Want to Write (coauthored with Thomas Newkirk); Write Beside Them: Risk, Voice, and Clarity in High School Writing, which won the 2009 James N. An action plan for English classrooms!

High school English teachers, this is what we've been waiting for! Kittle shows us why and how to motivate our teen students to find books they love and, in the process, improve their reading levels - which is something we are not accomplishing with our current, outdated methods. This book has inspired me to be determined: I WILL find a way to fund, stock, and maintain a classroom library that will get kids reading, thinking, and writing. Thank you, Penny Kittle.

Love, love, love this book! This is a great companion text for any Donalyn Miller followers (i.e., "The Book Whisperer," "Reading in the Wild"). It has completely changed how I teach in my HS ELA classroom! I highly recommend this book!

Good overview for getting started with cross platform development.

The book provides a good overview for cross platform development. The book goes through building an iOS and Android application with a shared business logic layer by using Portable Class Libraries. It also has an example of using dependency injection for injecting platform specific implementations and MVVM pattern for extracting common code a reusable library.

Another nice thing is that the sample app uses Azure Mobile Services for storing user data and sending push notification so users will get an overview of Azure as well. Also, the book shows the steps needed for deploying the application to Google Play Store and Apple App Store which is especially helpful for beginners.

The book would be better if it had a chapter about MVVM frameworks such as MvvmCross or ReactiveUI but I guess it is out of the scope of the book. However if you are serious about building a production cross platform application with Xamarin I recommend using any of those existing frameworks instead of inventing the bicycle.

Xamarin Cross-Platform Dev Intro

If you're getting started in cross-platform (particularly iOS and Android) Xamarin programming, Jonathan Peppers' "Xamarin Cross-platform Application Development" might be the book for you.
Structure-wise, the first two chapters provide the basics of the tools and, of course, the obligatory "Hello …" sample app: In this case, "Hello Platform".
The next 5 chapters focus largely on the development and deployment of a cross-platform "XamChat" application. There are individual chapters focusing on the iOS and Android aspects as well as a chapter on creating the cross-platform aspects.
The last few chapters cover various topics common to Xamarin/mobile development (3rd party components, binding to native libraries, GPS, Camera, Contacts and app stores).
One of the key benefits of Xamarin development is the opportunity for code-sharing between mobile apps (iOS, Android and Windows Phone). As Xamarin is primarily focused at Android and iOS, both Xamarin's web site and this book, provide only passing mention of WP8 development. That said, many of the techniques discussed in the book on cross-platform development, would carry over to a Windows phone app.
This book has a number of strong points; It covers many of the major areas that mobile developers and Xamarin developers will run into. It covers the basics of the software needed for each platform. It covers the tools and how to use them. It discusses some of the platform-specific controls and techniques. It discusses how to use the basic facilities that most apps use (camera, GPS, etc). And it covers a lot of the details of getting your app into the iOS App Store and Google Play.
What this book won't provide is a lot of detail about Android development and iOS development; which is to say, if you're doing a moderately complex app, you're bound to get into areas not covered by this book. Android and iOS are both very rich platforms and to cover either in great detail would require separate books, so it would be unreasonable to expect this book to cover both platforms in great detail. So if you're unfamiliar with these platforms, you'll need additional resources.
The book seems to assume the reader is going to go with the MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel) design pattern. In fact, MVVM Cross is probably the most popular development framework for Xamarin and so, this is probably not a bad assumption. But readers should be aware that other patterns can be used as well.
Xamarin provides Xamarin Studio (a cross-platform IDE for Xamarin apps) as well as Visual Studio integration. This book only looks at Xamarin Studio, so if you're using the Visual Studio integration, some aspects of project management will be different.
Bottom line: If you're getting started with Xamarin programming, this book is a really good introduction. It covers the basics of Xamarin and general mobile development; certainly enough to get anyone up and running and writing basic applications. This book would be of limited value to someone who's already done some Xamarin development and it would be of limited value as a long-term reference.

Good intro to Xamarin

I received a preview copy of this book to review. I've been a SharePoint developer for 8 years, but am looking into changing focus to something new. Mobile is hot and probably isn't cooling off soon.

While I didn't dig into the examples, I did read through the chapters. The example that they use throughout the book is easy to follow and allows for utilizing the basics of Xamarin development for both an iOS and Android app. PCLs are covered as are push notifications (Apple Push and Azure Mobile Services), submitting to the app stores, and using other device resources (camera, contacts, GPS).

There's 2 things that I'd like to see covered that aren't. First, the examples are all done on a Mac so it doesn't show connecting to a Mac when developing on Windows. Second, it doesn't cover the new Xamarin.Forms feature. However, that was announced just recently and this book was published well before that.

If you're needing something to get you started, this is a great option for that.

The France-1940 as a true image of the World-2013.

An excellent book – I can recommend it as probably the most frightful one among other honest mirrors of the XX century. No doubts, Orwell is quite frightful too, but, at least, his world is just a would-be fantasy, while "Scum of the Earth" is reality itself. And it wouldn't be that hopeless reality if it would be limited to France-1940 only (though a loathsome picture of even one ex-great nation's total final corruption is tragic enough, of course). Unfortunately, the reality-2013 is much more sinister, because the past seven decades show that the same cancer of moral degradation is eagerly devouring now all the Western world, from the USA to Australia. Koestler's quote from Maeterlinck’s "Life of the Termites" is so eloquent in showing the present-day utter luck of freedom's support (to tell nothing about the elementary human dignity's support) anywhere, be it state institutes, media, church or family bonds: "…A planter enters his house after an absence of five or six days; everything is apparently as he left it, nothing seems changed. He sits down on a chair, it collapses. He grabs the table to regain his balance, it falls to pieces under his hands. He leans against the central pillar, which gives way and brings down the roof in a cloud of dust". Exactly so – there is no more firm support around us, indeed! The termites have turned into dust all the former defenses of the free society, and (that's probably the worst thing of them all) it's we, it's we ourselves and nobody else, who permitted this overwhelming rot, generously inviting all kinds of termites for a free lunch. Mr. Koestler's book was ridiculed or silenced by termites-friends when his honest narrative of France's collapse could still be fruitfully used as a wise lesson. Now it's only the 100%-true prophecy - but, naturally, it doesn't make "Scum of the Earth" less precious even a tiny bit. The book is really magnificent! Rostislav, Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

How was life in a FRENCH concentration camp during the phoney war of 1939 / 40 ? Arthur will tell you. He also spells out the appalling state of French morale when war on Germany was declared. This must have contributed to them folding so quickly under the Nazi Blitzkreig. The central theme is that the French Govt, identified, and rounded up threats to national security. Today, threats to National security are streaming in at the rate of 1 million plus per annum, to be welcomed with blankets and food parcels.

France was defeated...

before the war started. Arthur Koestler's book Scum of the Earth is a readable memoir of his adventures in France just before, and at the beginning of, the Second World War. France is described by the author as "wine and bread" country with little industrialization and a desire to be left alone after going though the anguish of the Franco-Prussian War and World War I. As an anti-Nazi, he was imprisioned by the Franch at the concentration camp as a political prisoner at Verant and suffered various deprivations.

His philosophical outlook is revealed to be one of democratic socialism which he believed was a balance between plutocratic capitalism and communism. The book that I read (an old Macmillian edition) was a short 280 pages long and was easily readable. There are no illustrations in the book, but his written descriptions more than made up for this deficiency. Some of his viewpoints on government I have some disagreement with (being a libertarian), but I give five stars for this book.

The field of digital signal processing (DSP) has expanded rapidly over the past three decades. During the late sixties and seventies, we witnessed the development of the basic theory for digital filter design and the development of computationally efficient algorithms for evaluating the Fourier transform, convolution, and correlation. During the past two decades, we experienced an explosion in DSP applications spurred by significant advances in digital computer technology and integrated-circuit fabrication. In this period, the basic DSP theory has expanded to include parametric signal modeling, with applications to power spectrum estimation and system modeling, adaptive signal processing algorithms, multirate and multidimensional signal processing, and higher-order statistical methods for signal processing.

With the expansion of basic DSP theory and the rapid growth in applications (spurred by the development of fast and inexpensive digital signal processors), there is a growing interest in advanced courses in DSP covering a variety of topics. This book was written with the goal of satisfying, in part, the resulting need for textbooks covering these advanced topics.

Most of the material contained in this book was first published in 1992 by the Macmillan Publishing Company, in a book entitled Advanced Digital Signal Processing (which went out of print in 1997). This new book differs from the earlier publication by the inclusion of a new chapter (Chapter 7) on QRD-based fast adaptive filter algorithms, and the deletion of a chapter on multirate signal processing. The other chapters have remained essentially the same.

The major focus of this book is on algorithms for statistical signal processing. Chapter 2 treats computationally efficient algorithms for convolution and for the computation of the discrete Fourier transform. Chapter 3 treats linear prediction and optimum Wiener filters; included in this chapter is a description of the Levinson-Durbin and Schur algorithms. Chapter 4 considers the filter design problem based on the least-squares method and describes several methods for solving least squares problems, including the Givens transformation, the Householder transformation, and singular-value decomposition. Chapter 5 treats single-channel adaptive filters based on the LMS algorithm and on recursive least-squares algorithms. Chapter 6 describes computationally efficient recursive least-squares algorithms for multichannel signals. Chapter 7 is focused on the uses of signal flow graphs for deriving computationally efficient adaptive filter algorithms based on the QR decomposition. Chapter 8 deals with power spectrum estimation, including both parametric and nonparametric methods. Chapter 9 describes the use of higher-order statistical methods for signal modeling and system identification.

Although the material in this book was written by six different authors, we have tried very hard to maintain common notation throughout the book. We believe we have succeeded in developing a coherent treatment of the major topics outlined in the preceding overview. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to selected basic DSP material that is typically found in a first-level DSP text, and also serves to establish some of the notation used throughout the book.

In our treatment of the various topics covered herein, we generally assume that the reader has had a prior course on the fundamentals of digital signal processing. The fundamental topics assumed as background include the z-transform, the analysis and characterization of discrete-time systems, the Fourier transform, the discrete Fourier transform (DFT), and the design of FIR and IIR digital filters. Excellent content, average presentation

The high point of this book is an extensive collection of algorithms and an excellent set of references for further research. Each topic is dealt with in an orderly fashion so that the simple (and usually chronologically earlier) proposals in an area appear first, followed by more complex efficient algorithms.
I have been through the first six (of the total nine) chapters in good detail. The chapters on FFT (1 and 2) and Linear prediction (chapter 3) are well done and serve as an excellent platform to get into the subject. The material is easily implemented in MATLAB using the description in the chapters.
Chapter 4 presents a detailed introduction to least-squares algorithms with a pretty good theoretical treatment. The material presented motivates the merits of least-squares approaches and lays out the various numerical approaches to solving such problems in practice. Chapter 5 and 6 follow up on this introduction to present the specific algorithms for Recursive Least-squares, Lattice-ladder algorithms, stabilized fast RLS etc.
The book gets only 4-stars because of problems with presentation. In the chapters 4,5,6 there is an inconsistency in the symbols used. The symbols used are also not readily related to the quantities they are supposed to represent. Instead of repeating a simple equation, the book often refers to equation numbers in some other part of the chapter or sometimes in other chapters. In some sections algorithms and alternative strategies just appear one after another without a good "big-picture". A flow-chart or some kind of a schematic to help classify the various techniques would enhance the utility of this book manifold (e.g., see "Fundamentals of Statistical Signal Processing" by Steven M. Kay).
Overall, I recommend this book as a very useful starting point for anyone (with a basic DSP background) interested in implementing statistical signal processing algorithms. It is also an excellent survey of existing literature.

This welcome new edition of the report is enhanced by an informative introductory essay by Harvard archaeologist Steven LeBlanc, whose work in the 1970s reinvigorated archaeological research in the Mimbres area. An Ancient Mystery Yet Unsolved

There is something strange, and disturbing, about Mimbres pottery designs, and despite the many attempts, no one has successfully explained their origins. This is a good display of a number of the designs that will give you hours of mystery as you attempt to figure out just what the Mimbres people were trying to show about the world they lived in at the time. The designs go much deeper than the usual explinations. Much, much deeper, and the more you study them the more you realize there is a hidden story behind them no one has so far figured out. A fascinating book. Well worth the purchase.

Great book about the Swarts Ruin, very informative with a great introduction by Steven LeBlanc. I very much enjoyed reading this and the photos and illustrations are phenomenal! I love seeing the different patterns and designs on Mimbres painted pottery. Highly recommend this book!

it would have been nice if both Jill and the silk were more contrasting ...

It's very expensive for a book printed in black and white. Also, it would have been nice if both Jill and the silk were more contrasting in color, because sometimes it is difficult to tell exactly what is going on. I really appreciate her youtube videos, and I feel like the cost of this is, in a way, going towards those. She is very talented and very good at explaining a lot of difficult moves. I can't decide if this book is a three or a four star resource, but I am glad she authored it and put it out there.

This book is nothing if not thorough. It has very clear, step-by-step descriptions of tricks, which, if you're anything like me and forget the next step when you're upside down in the air, this is very helpful to review at home, and easier and more comprehensive than hunting down youtube videos of various tricks you're working on. This is also a tremendous guide if you have time where you practice on your own. It's very detailed and the pictures are so specific and helpful. If you're slipping in a hip key because of fabric placement you can look at the picture and know how to correct it. It also covers terminology, muscles, and so much more! This is a great tool and I love my new copy! Between this book and Jill's video resources (that you can find out about on the aerial physique website) she has made learning aerial so accessible to everyone who wants to learn more and grow more as and aerialist!

I was amazed out how much information the book contained

I came across Jill Franklin's first book, 'Beginner's Guide to Aerial Silk', about six months ago and WOW!!! I was amazed out how much information the book contained. In just a few short weeks as I continued practicing the techniques from Jill's book, I couldn't believe how much more noticeable my upper body strength improved and I was much more flexible.
I also follow Jill on her YouTube channel, where she demonstrates many of her movements and I learned she was wrapping up production of her second book. I just searched Amazon and Jill's second book is now available.
I look forward to ordering a copy and can't wait to expand my knowledge of Aerial Silk. YOU'RE AN AWESOME MOTIVATOR AND A GREAT COACH. Gary P. Salt Lake City Utah.

Editor Lakin is doing her part to make this happen with her pithy, fun, and supremely useful guide to the everyday writing mistakes most of us don't even realize we're making. Her book is conversational and approachable enough to make for enjoyable reading. But its true value is in its ‘lookupability.’ This is the perfect guide to keep on your desk, next to your computer, for those moments when you're just not sure which word is right.

A handy, readable guide

I don't know C.S. Lakin, but I've used her editing services once (and plan to again--she's a dream work with). As soon as I learned she was writing a usage guide, I decided to buy it. I received mine today and have already read through several chapters. I love the "Tips for Fiction Writers" on nearly every page and the chapter on Fiction Rules--partly because I've run into fiction-specific issues (writing numbers, for instance) that require a quick refresh. But everyone, even students, can benefit from the book. As an accomplished writer and editor, Ms. Lakin's skills and knowledge will allow me to reach for one volume for most of my questions instead of thumbing through various style guides. What a relief! And, yes, I may update this review once I've read every page, but I have a feeling I'll simply make this my well-worn, go-to writer's companion. (Note: I received a free Kindle download upon buying the paperback, but I'm not sure how long the offer lasts.)

Good book, but needs improvement.

Suggested Areas for improvement:

* Basic sentence structure and common mistakes made by writers.
* When to use 'the' and when not to.
* When to use a/an (this is covered, but not sufficiently).
* Punctuation (also covered, but insufficient).
* Singular/plural & tense mistakes made by writers.
* POV issues.
* The right ways of using punctuation around a dialogue (I found it elsewhere, but this should have been covered by this author). For the benefit of others, I will include the three common ways of writing dialogue/speech tags -

- Mary said, "It sounds like fun. I want to go with you."
- "It sounds like fun," Mary said. "I want to go with you."
- "It sounds like fun. I want to go with you," Mary said.
Please note: Punctuation needs to be within the quotes (in US English). The second sentence should be written like below, if the two sentences were separated by a comma, instead of a period:
- "It sounds like fun," Mary said, "I want to go with you." (Note the period and comma after "Mary said" in each sentence.)

* "'She followed the man into the store with determination.' These are easy to fix, of course, just by rewording" - How? Reword it and show it to us. A few sections are left incomplete (like this), especially near the beginning.

In general, I learned many new things from this book. I have been using many incorrect words in my writing, and I hope I will remember what I learned from this book. This is not a general grammar book - it shows many mistakes made by authors, especially with (incorrect) usage of words. This book also includes many general tips for fiction writers.

If you have decided to self-edit your book, you can buy this book. Even if you intend to send it to an editor, the first few rounds of editing should be done by you, the author (IMO). With editors billing by the hour, I guess this will save you some money, as well.
