Very Well Done

DK is known for their beautifully laid out, highly graphic, yet extremely informative texts for all ages. With The Sociology Book, we have a book in an award-winning series (including religions, economics, politics, business, psychology, etc.) that makes a complex and difficult subject not only accessible but easy to understand. The book doesn't pander, lightly touch upon, or gloss over the subject; rather, the subject is broken down by sociologists through the ages and their viewpoints are explained. As such, this is an ideal book for teens and adults to really understand the topic of socoiology today, suitable for reading parts or the topic as a whole.

The book breaks down as follows: Introduction, Foundations of Sociology, Social Inequalities, Modern Living, Living in a Global World, Culture and Identity, Work and Consumerism, The Role of Institutions, Families and Intimacies, Directory, Glossary, Index. Within these sections, topics include: Science can be used to build a better world (August Comte), Gemeinshaft and gesselschaft (Ferdinand Tommies), The poor are excluded from the ordinary living patterns, customs, and activities of life (Peter Townsend), The freedom to remake our cities and ourselves (Henri Lefebvre), The modern world system (Immanuel Wallenstein), Culture is ordinary (Raymond Williams), The puritan wanted to work in a calling; we are forced to do so (Max Weber), The iron law of oligarchy (Robert Michels), Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature (Karl Marx), The time of the tribes (Michael Mafesoli).

I really like this book, as a Sociology major college student, this book really helps break down social issues and history in concise explanations. I love the info graphics as well as the colors. Well organized, I believe this book can be helpful and applied in any field of life.

Great sociology book

Any textbook dealing on a specific subject matter in a easy to read and follow format get 5 stars. As a sociologist and professor, it is really tough getting students to read there textbooks. Many find them boring or 'dry', which I tend to agree with them for some. This book provides great insight into theories, sociologists, and concepts in an easy to follow format. However it could never replace an Introduction to Sociology college textbook because it does not cover everything. It is an overview.

Book Review of Continuous Permanent Improvement written by Arun Hariharan

Continuous Permanent Improvement (CPI) by Arun Hariharan is a complete treatise on the subject. The book has dealt with the subject matter in totality with a customer centric approach and finally explained the positive impact that CPI can have on the results amounting to a healthier bottom line as well a happy customer. The language used in the book is very lucid and not loaded with technical jargon.

Arun has shared his years of experience, and has been fair in sharing what was done right and what went wrong and also brought out lessons learnt so that the readers can imbibe what is relevant in their context. He has presented CPI in a way that it can be made applicable across Verticals, thus making it interesting for a manufacturing unit as much as for a service provider, however I must say the book has a propensity towards companies addressing the mass market.

I am confident that if the concepts treated in the book such as CPI, LEAN, Six Sigma, KAIZEN, FTR, RCA, and Just-in-time and numerous others are imbibed as a company-wide Philosophy and culture rather than only for applying it to individual processes, it would help get sustained results over years and this could be true for any size of company. All this has also been exemplified with interesting anecdotes which makes the reading quite interesting.

Summary – A highly recommended read for Functional Leaders, Business Leaders and CEOs who are looking at ways to improve the bottom line and quality as well as retain customers, in today’s world of ever increasing competition. Good for the classroom

I'll give it 4 stars for the content but falls short on missing images not contained in the download page. I use the book in teaching a PhotoShop Elements class and I always have to add several images that should have been contained. Scott did eliminate the erasing the pixels on the golf page (Elements 14 had that) but did show it using a clipping mask. I try to have the students not to erase pixels but use masks.

I have several of Scott Kelby's books and every one of them is a joy. This is no exception - just pick something you would like to do with your photo and Scott will give you step-by-step easy instructions on how to do it. Thank you, Scott. Photo-editing would not be nearly as much fun without you.

This is the one to have on your shelf. The best place to start an indepth examination of why soils are, and behave, the way they do. Well documented: allowing shepherdizing and expansion of resources. Invaluable. The one resource I will NOT lend as I do not wish to be caught without it!

A very good book on soil/clay mineralogy

This book gives an excellent description of minerals in soils. It gives very detailed information on the common clay minerals, and also the uncommon ones (hydroxy-interlayer clays). Concise, detailed, one of my main references for my master's thesis.

A sweet story

My Thoughts:

When you pick up a book after reading the synopsis, you expect the story to stick to it for the most part. Sure, there may be some slight variations, or a twist thrown in there, but you anticipate a certain kind of story. So when you read the book and it doesn't have the conflict you expect, it kinda causes a little bit of confusion.

While Olivia does write and publish books and Logan finds out about it, that isn't the story. There is barely any "conflict" in the story... it's more like an extended love story with a couple speedbumps along the way. I don't want to be all spoilery, but I feel like I have to explain this since it's my main concern. They meet, become friends, they flirt, her secret is revealed, he's upset... then they talk and it becomes a love story. Literally the last half is their love story. There's no real complications along the way, aside from run-ins with her husband (they couldn't get divorced right away), and seeing her mom for the first time since she was kicked out after getting pregnant.

Something Real was a sweet story. I liked it, don't get me wrong, but I feel sort of thrown because the synopsis left so much out. It was nice that it wasn't full of angst or unnecessary drama. I wish that there was more build-up, not that there had to be conflict, it just felt like something was missing. Everything fell together almost too perfectly, too easily, if that makes any sense. Still a good story for those who love to read love stories with little conflict.

This is a nice enough, fairly enjoyable contemporary romance with a heroine whose life keeps going all wrong, and a hero who at times is definitely too good to be true. It was an easy read, but longer than it needed to be. It’s also not quite as clear cut as the blurb makes it out to be, since her novel-writing doesn’t really come into things much.

It’s hard not to feel for Olivia in the first few chapters when her husband leaves her. Not that it’s much of a loss, since she’s always been the earner in the family and the one who looks after the children and the house. I have to admit I expected her writing career to be a major plot point, one that helped her not only get over her abandonment, but also take away some of the strain of being a single parent. Instead it’s a bit of a hobby that comes and goes throughout the book to conveniently coincide with certain points.

Need Olivia to make friends? Cue her boss catching a peek of her writing and loving it. Need an awkward yet sexy conversation with Logan? Cue book research question. Need a spanner in the works of their relationship? Well… you get the idea. Part of me was pleased that her writing career didn’t take off out of nowhere and propel her to instant stardom and riches, but instead it’s just another thing that hangs around in the background while Olivia makes adjustments and takes forever to get together with Logan.

I think what I was hoping for from this book was something a bit fluffy, a lot fun and with a nice romance at heart. That’s not quite what I got. There are funny moments and Olivia’s boys are sweet, there is a bit of fluffiness, especially when she and Logan get together (so many declarations of love), but mostly it’s just drags on. It’s understandable that Olivia is a little hesitant to start anything with Logan, but he doesn’t make a move for ages either, then there’s a bit of drama before things settle down and I just wanted them to get on with it.

For the whole last third I was constantly waiting for something bad to happen – or well, anything to happen – but there really isn’t anything. Well, a couple of repetitive scenes where Olivia loses confidence in their relationship, none of which actually go anywhere interesting. The rest of the time it’s all nice and perfect – and boring. Seeing a happy ever after is nice, I suppose, but not when it drags on and on without any real plot beyond happiness. Not that I have anything against happiness, but it’s not very interesting to read. I genuinely read on waiting for something bad to disrupt everything and make the general loveliness have a point.

Not that I’m cynical, but I read a lot of romances so I need something to make them stand out, to make me remember them and want to read them again. This had nothing. Which is a shame, because there are bits which were fun and sweet and I enjoyed, I just think it needs to be shorter.

Good Book!

After reading the book synopsis, I just had to request Something Real by Ariadne Wayne. What an enjoyable read! This is an affecting love story with a diversified cast of characters and an engaging plot. The first chapter is startling, which immediately drew me into this courageous and loving book.

Olivia Grant is the heroine of this story and her new life begins when she accidentally gets pregnant at a very young age. As a result, her single mom immediately disowns her and she ends up marrying Evan, her boyfriend and the father of her child. Their life together is dulls-ville, with Olivia supporting him and their two young children. Evan is beyond lazy and the only thing he does to help Olivia out is pick-up the children from school and daycare. Olivia's situation worsens, when she arrives home from work and finds the police on her doorstep, minding her kids. Evan did not pick up the kids that day, instead he cleaned out his belongings and left her for her best friend Donna. Needless to say, Evan is contemptible!

Logan Mitchell is Olivia's new, gorgeous, apartment neighbor. He adds some much needed fun to Olivia's situation and he adores her kids. They share a mutual attraction which evolves into something real and life changing. In addition, as Olivia dabbles into the world of writing erotica in order to earn some extra money, Logan becomes her muse, unknowingly of course.

This is both a hot and sweet love story. Olivia and Logan have amazing chemistry and Ms. Wayne develops their relationship very thoughtfully. The story is nicely-written and sexy, with a feeling of hope running through it. Ms. Wayne creates wonderful, realistic characters that are both interesting and engaging. I really liked this story and plan to read more from this "new to me" author.

An ingenius framework for participatory groups

Jason Diceman outlines the use of a very valuable tool for group based decision making in the Dotmocracy Handbook. This approach is a great way to ensure that amongst a large, heterogeneous group of stakeholders, everyone has an opportunity to express ideas and propose solutions on equal footing. The use of the Dotmocracy sheets in the brainstorming and feedback processes counters traditional "groupthink" traps often encountered in the conference or focus group environment where ideas gain disproportional analysis based on the rhetorical skills or prestige of the initial presenter. The incorporating the Dotmocracy sheets into a decision making process empowers participants to advocate ideas that might otherwise stay dormant. The system is simple, but effective and has a wide range of potential audiences.

About the Author
Sylvia S. Mader has authored several nationally recognized biology texts published by McGraw Hill. Educated at Bryn Mawr College, Harvard University, Tufts University, and Nova Southeastern University, she holds degrees in both Biology and Education. Over the years she has taught at University of Massachusetts, Lowell; Massachusetts Bay Community College; Suffolk University; and Nathan Mayhew Seminars. Her ability to reach out to science-shy students led to the writing of her first text, Inquiry into Life, that is now in its thirteenth edition. Highly acclaimed for her crisp and entertaining writing style, her books have become models for others who write in the field of biology. Although her writing schedule is always quite demanding, Dr. Mader enjoys taking time to visit and explore the various ecosystems of the biosphere. Her several trips to the Florida Everglades and Caribbean coral reefs resulted in talks she has given to various groups around the country. She has visited the tundra in Alaska, the taiga in the Canadian Rockies, the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, and tropical rain forests in South America and Australia. A photo safari to the Serengeti in Kenya resulted in a number of photographs for her texts. She was thrilled to think of walking in Darwin’s steps when she journeyed to the Galápagos Islands with a group of biology educators. Dr. Mader was also a member of a group of biology educators who traveled to China to meet with their Chinese counterparts and exchange ideas about the teaching of modern-day biology.

Overly priced for few changes

It should come as no surprise that there are few changes for this edition vs. the older one. My lab partner has the older edition, so at the start of each lab we go page by page to compare the changes. If your teacher allows it, you'd be better off saving money and buying the next oldest edition of this book and just photocopying the missing pages if they have to be turned in.

Price aside, the shipping was quick and it was needed for my biology class. It's not meant as a substitute for an actual textbook, but it does give a pretty decent overview of the concepts discussed that the labs take place on.

Lab Manual

This book was required for a course I am taking. It's alright... nothing terribly exciting but does break down basic biology concepts pretty well. If you already know basic high school/college biology and chemistry it's just going to be a review for you.

I gave it 5 stars because I was very pleased with the overall quality and fast arrival. I ordered it standard and it got here in perfect condition about 4 days before a friends book that she had ordered before me from a different seller.

Product displayed was not the product received! For the money I spent on the lab manual it should have at least had the same cover page as shown and should have been spiral bound versus three hole punched and kept together with cloth ribbon tied in a not! My only hope is that when I start the class the contents match was is required for the class labs. Photo of what was actually received supplied.
